Historia
When a letter from his supposedly deceased mother finds its way into his hands, life changes in an instant for international pop star Bodhi Beckett. Reeling from the deception of those closest to him, Bodhi spirals out of control and is sent to a secluded mansion in the coastal mountains of Southern California for some rest and relaxation. But the retreat proves to be anything but relaxing when a raging wildfire sets the landscape around him ablaze. While escaping the flames, Bodhi rescues Breeze, a quirky, pet-loving woman, and together the two fight their way to safety.

A very funny story.

Great dialogue especially about all the misfit animals. The superstar story was eclipsed by Breeze’s quirky personality. All with California’s fire season to kindle a romance. Yikes!

Historia
Rex “TW” McMurtry’s perpetual singlehood wouldn’t bother him so much if all his ex-girlfriends didn’t keep marrying the very next person they dated, especially when so many of those grooms are his closest friends. He may be a pro-football defensive end for the Chicago Squalls, but the press only wants to talk about how he’s always a groomsman and never a groom. Bartender Abigail McNerny is the gal-pal, the wing-woman, the she-BFF. Abby is convinced no one on earth could ever entice her into a romantic relationship...except that one guy she’s loved since preschool.

Soooooo worth the credit!
Revisado: 08-03-22
So many books in the romance category are light on substance and rather formulaic: a meet cute, then some sort of problem, then a HEA. Honestly, during the first year of Covid that is all I could handle. I had just retired and discovered the Romance Catalog at Audible. I listened to a book a day as a distraction from the fears of trying to live during a pandemic.
In “The Comeback” Lily Chu layered into her book the weighty subjects of work place discrimination, a difficult sibling relationship, cultural parental expectation, fears about the health of an aging parent, and the question of ‘How many generations does a family have to live in Canada (or America) before they are considered to be just Canadian and not the hyphenated Chinese-Canadian?’
Ari’s comical self-talk as she maneuvers through these issues in her life kept the book from being as angst ridden as others in this genre. I’m at the stage in my life where, if you’re going to do angst, please please make it funny. But I’m just a jaded retired social worker, so don’t mind me.
I most enjoyed the peak behind the curtain of K-Pop band music. And last, but not least, the romance was actually romance. The barriers to their HEA were many and complex with both characters attaining the life of their dreams only to realize they would live it in a cage. Yup, well worth that credit.

This story deserves a Re-write.
Revisado: 02-14-22
Ting/Tia and her parents were fairly believable as members of a wealthy immigrant family. Though as far as Tiger parents go, they were push overs. Andrew absolutely wallowed in angst throughout which dragged the story down. Curiously, the sex was inserted in weird and off-putting moments. Even an attorney would realize that sex is not the correct response to a loved one explaining her pain from the most tragic loss in her life…in which he played a part. No, not done unless he is the most insensitive man in the Penny Reid Universe. Oh wait, he is. Speaking of that, the author did not do justice to the characters borrowed from the Knitting in the City books. Missing is the charm in the way Dan swears. In this story he appears as a one dimensional knuckle-dragger. The borrowed characters were shadows of themselves and wasted in this book. Yes, Re-write reducing the angst by 75%, reduce the miscommunication by 75%, flesh out the borrowed characters (making them actually recognizable as Knitting in the City folk), and Jeez-Louise install a pair on Andrew. This story is worth a re-write. I kept reading thinking the characters would improve. Sadly they did not. I enjoyed Kelsey Navarro’s narration. And while I initially did not think Mr Walker was proficient, I went back and added a star because his narration actually reflected the one dimensional aspect of Andrew Parker.

Historia
Harlan Kristiansen may not be good at many things, but he can sure catch a pass. He’s an All-Pro at charming a room, too, and then there’s that Norse God thing. He can even figure out how to tackle a woman and save her from a charging bison. On skis. What happens when you drop that game-winning pass, though, and your house is too big, too weird, and too empty? When your dad’s a mean drunk, your mom took off a long time ago and stayed gone, and all your money can’t keep your little sister safe? You fall back on what you know, that’s what.

This was one incredible listen!
Revisado: 12-09-21
I love being able to say, “ Wow, I didn’t see that coming.” Actually I said it several times during this listen.
‘Thor’ seemed like he was going to be a one dimensional 30 year old professional jock at the opening chapter. His life burdens provided the friction and pressure to produce a multi-faceted guy who had more than Viking blond hair, serious good looks, and and big muscles.
Jennifer’s story was much more than the plucky, much too young, single mom trying to resist the charm of a Chris Hemsworth doppelgänger. Oh honey, just hit that boy!
I am a huge fan of the New Zealand series and was not sure I would be interested in a different setting with American football as the back story. Very happy to report I loved this book. It shared well crafted characters, compelling storylines, and brought me to tears…. just like the books set in New Zealand.

Way more story than I was expecting.
Revisado: 04-21-21
Very complex themes run throughout this book. Proving you don’t know the burdens others are carrying, or hiding.
During Covid I have selected books with lighter story material and almost did not select this book because I didn’t want ‘the drama’ added to daily life already complicated by the incessant barrage of news about politics, gun violence, and human suffering. Yup, I have wimped out after retirement from being a social worker for over 20 years. I liked the way the characters issues were wrapped up. In my work, you seldom get HEAs so it was lovely to see the resolutions of these extremely messy story lines. Brava to the author.

Revisado: 03-13-21
A great listen! Initially I was uncomfortable with a revelation from Yvette’s diary.....being a social worker.
Happily I found the book to be engaging with compelling characters, and a wild ride of a storyline. The fact that AJ and Logan were there to kill Yvette was an intriguing twist....as this book was in the romance category. Definitely not a f-them and forget-them book. These characters haunted me for quite a few days. Thanks JA Huss.

Revisado: 02-14-21
Actually I would love to hang out w the knitting nite ‘ladies’ too. Witty, intelligent, and while emotionally healthy, for the most part, there’s just enough quirk to make the characters in these books extremely interesting. For me though, it’s the very clever humor peppered in the dialog.
Audible books have gotten me through this Covid pandemic and Penny Reid’s books have kept me laughing while gardening, cleaning, cooking, etc.

Revisado: 01-09-21
Saving the best for last? While I love all the other couples in the “Knitting in the City” series, this story has to be my favorite. The trials and tribulations the couple experienced did not feel contrived, but were unique and believable for an ‘across the tracks’ relationship. Love love loved this story.

Rhys Fletcher is not in love with his sister-in-law. That would be a very, very bad idea, and he doesn’t entertain bad ideas. He also doesn’t lie to himself. Both of those things can’t be true, so he’ll do what he’s done since the long-ago night when his brother, Dylan, turned up in an Auckland bar after a brutal rugby match between their two teams, and introduced his new girlfriend - a dark-eyed, much-too-young girl named Zora. He’ll lie. Now, his brother’s gone, and Rhys is back in New Zealand and settling into his new job as the head coach of the Auckland Blues
