Really? The worst trope in romances. He devastated her - intentionally - because he didn't feel worthy of her and he had a bad childhood. She spent years recovering her sense of confidence and trust. That is just not right.

Animals (squirrels) are killed and gutted. The h puts her dog in danger by being a neglectful owner when she knows her dog wanders and the h rarely pays attention.

Dated and boring

The story is supposed to be a flashback, but was a bit heavy handed. Especially the valley girl speak just made Anna seem immature. The narrator is choppy and it is hard to know which character is speaking. Anna’s personal villain was obvious and Gabriel didn’t protect her. Hurting women was just paid off and enabled. I had read a couple later stories and wanted to read the origin story. Sometimes, you can’t go back.

So bad

Starts with OW perspective - not romantic
h writes love letter to H, but he doesn't respond. OW calls h to tell her he moved on and they are engaged.
H finally wants to make sure h OK, so he calls the woman who was responsible for breaking them up in the first place.
h made it so easy for OW that I eventually just wanted her to kill the h to get it over with

First of all, Teddy Hamilton is great! Maxine Mitchell is good. BUT, the h is very annoying. She pontificates on how she despises liars, yet she tells lies ALL THE TIME. The H tells her she needs an alarm system, because the local evil MC is out to get her, and she says no one around her has alarms. H says he has one and an arsenal. The h says he is sexist. He is protecting his arsenal. The h was stubborn to the point of biting off her nose to spite her face, as my mom used to say. I have a headache from eye rolling. I jumped forward a lot when it was the h's POV.

Narration not good enough

I was skeptical about the Virtual Voice narration, but it was better than I feared. HOWEVER, not good enough. Not enough differention between character voices; chapters run together and made following timeline hard; and not enough emphasis where needed (no sarcasm, challenge, pleading, etc needed for the story). Bottom line - I will pass on Virtual Voice stories from now on.

Hit the miscommunication trope hard!

The story was a good one, but I almost DNF'd it because of the reliance on the miscommunication trope during much of the book. He thought she was slumming it, she thought he was a playboy, but they didnt talk to each other for a year! Way too long in life and way too long in the story. Otherwise, very entertaining.

What did bother me was the attitudes about the ruinations: the FMC's brother was ruined because he would not be goaded into a duel. The FMC was ruined because she was sexually harrassed and almost raped. Both of these incidents were because of Heath, the MMC's brother. But, Heath was never suitably repentant about that. Neither was the MMC - he even said something to the effect that the FMC WAS an actress, so...

H has it all his way

Minus his major problem, he knew the h wanted him. Still. He also whined about people judging him whenever he took a drink. Gee, I wonder why? Also, even after being gone and out of practice for over a year, he still beat the h in a competition. Really?

The worst part? The H used his job to bang clients and earn big tips. Even after getting together with the h, he met up with a "regular" of his. He didn't bang her this time, but only because he doesn't do married women (she had gotten married since he "saw" her last). NOT because he was in a relationship with someone else. What a gross -servicing clients - douchbag!!
