Such a beautiful story. I cannot begin to write a review to do this story justice. It brings history to Life with deep wonderful characters and an authentic story. And as always, excellent narration by Ms Sneha Mathan. Loved it.

Excellent journey to a fascinating time
Revisado: 12-04-23
This is another book that, upon finishing, I need time to absorb and mourn its ending. Excellent journey to the 1600’s, such a fascinating period of time and one I don’t remember studying in history classes—which is a shame because the more things change the more they stay the same, as this story of personal power and control demonstrates. The writing and the narration whisk you away and you are there among the characters, feeling the heat or the rain, smelling the delicious food, seeing the speaking jewels…simply a masterpiece as is the entire series. Highly recommend.

Excellent! Like traveling in time
Revisado: 10-25-23
Such a wonderful series! I am completely transported to early 1900 India, while listening I am totally immersed as if I am there and when not listening I cannot wait to get back to these books. All three so far have been simply outstanding. Sneha Mathan is the absolute best reader of all time. Can’t wait for the next book!

Wonderful story, the narration gets better
Revisado: 10-13-23
Overall this was another wonderful book about India, early 1900’s. My favorite genre. Loved the characters, the glimpse into the lives of women at that time, both secluded and not, laws and discrimination. Some parts were humorous.
3 stars for the performance. I agree with other reviewers, it was just overdone. Because I was loving the sorry I stuck with it and it seemed better as the book went on. Maybe I got used to it or maybe the reader calmed down a bit. When she spoke in a normal sounding voice, she was fine. I’m glad I stuck with it and looking forward to book two in the series.

Historia
Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly: long ago she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. As she follows the case of Meena—a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man—Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past.

Stunning, heartbreaking, hopeful
Revisado: 09-15-23
Another magnificent story by Thrity Umrigar. This story takes place in modern times, yet it sometimes feels as if we are back in the dark ages a thousand years ago. A thought provoking dive into human behaviour, beliefs and traditions and how far people will go—both to resist change or to facilitate change. It is about unthinkable tragedy yet gives us an ending which is a path to hope. This is a book I could not stop listening to and will need to sit with for a while before I can pick up another book. Yes, it’s one of those. Should be required reading for students for the picture it paints of the world and real life occurrences. Excellent realistic characters. As usual, top notch narration by Sneha Mathan.

Revisado: 08-22-23
Wow! What a fantastic and beautiful story. I had to call in sick one day because I simply couldn’t tear myself away from this story. Narration is perfection. This is the sort of book I call a Big Book—it’s rich and filling with real and relatable characters, and read absolutely perfectly by Ms. Mathan. I shall be seeking more of her performances and have already purchased the remaining books in the trilogy.

A beautiful, moving story
Revisado: 09-12-22
This is a beautiful story. There is profound loss and sadness but also determination and hope. It brings to life the horrors and obstacles that refugees suffer, and yet endure. This is the story of people, normal people who had ordinary lives, homes and families, who lose everything due to war. It could be me. Or you. After listening to this story I will never, can never, see refugees as a giant anonymous mass of people. They are now individuals. My eyes are open. I loved the references to bees and beekeeping, as this is what originally drew me to the book being a hobby beekeeper myself. I was sobbing at the end, but full of hope and the lesson that Life does go on. It is possible to overcome evil and darkness and pain. Highly recommend.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

I will listen to this book again. Matthew shares many life nuggets worth hearing again, being reminded again, to ponder and absorb.

Excellent plot, character development, perfect narration
Revisado: 08-31-21
Loved this Audible book! Excellent plot with well developed characters. I wasn’t sure what decisions the characters would come to in the end so it kept me guessing. Very realistic dilemmas. Loved feeling immersed in the culture of Calcutta. Narration was superb with characters easy to identify and follow. Very well done.

Loved this meditation, works even for daytime
Revisado: 07-29-21
This is one of my favorite meditations so far. Although it is described as for promoting sleep, I love it for mornings as I start my day. Her narration is calming and natural without being sappy. The script is exactly what I needed to release anxiety over various stressful events with which I’m trying to cope. I felt calm, hopeful and energized and was able to begin my day on a positive note instead of feeling crushed by my worry. I’ll try this one for sleep also but with a few word changes in my own mind, it’s a fantastic daytime meditation as well. Thank you, Agapi. I’ll look for more of your work.
