Acerca de esta escucha

India’s only female lawyer, Perveen Mistry, is compelled to bring justice to the family of a murdered female Parsi student just as Bombay’s streets erupt in riots to protest British colonial rule. Sujata Massey is back with this third installment to the Agatha and Mary Higgins Clark Award-winning series set in 1920s Bombay.

November, 1921. Edward VIII, Prince of Wales and future ruler of India, is arriving in Bombay to begin a four-month tour. The Indian subcontinent is chafing under British rule, and Bombay solicitor Perveen Mistry isn’t surprised when local unrest over the royal arrival spirals into riots. But she’s horrified by the death of Freny Cuttingmaster, an 18-year-old female Parsi student, who falls from a second-floor gallery just as the prince’s grand procession is passing by her college.

Freny had come for a legal consultation just days before her death, and what she confided makes Perveen suspicious that her death was not an accident. Feeling guilty for failing to have helped Freny in life, Perveen steps forward to assist Freny’s family in the fraught dealings of the coroner’s inquest. When Freny’s death is ruled a murder, Perveen knows she can’t rest until she sees justice done. But Bombay is erupting: as armed British secret service march the streets, rioters attack anyone with perceived British connections and desperate shopkeepers destroy their own wares so they will not be targets of racial violence. Can Perveen help a suffering family when her own is in danger?

Another world

I loved the previous books in this series about Purveen Mistry, the only lady solicitor in Bombay India in the 1930s, and this is the best yet. Sujata Massey evokes the world of India at that time so completely it was disconcerting to leave them at the end of the book. I particularly liked the exploration of the family relationships, the political strivings and tensions of the time, the details of Parsi custom and religion, and of course, Purveen's relationship with Colin. I hope the next book will be coming soon, this story is far from over. The narrator is excellent.

Excellent! Like traveling in time

Such a wonderful series! I am completely transported to early 1900 India, while listening I am totally immersed as if I am there and when not listening I cannot wait to get back to these books. All three so far have been simply outstanding. Sneha Mathan is the absolute best reader of all time. Can’t wait for the next book!

Love this series

I love the glimpse into a bit of India's history portrayed through an unusual character. I like how the mystery unfolds and how the main character is able to insert herself into solving it.

Enjoy this series very much

Sujata Massey makes 1920s Bombay society come alive for me and I appreciate the care she takes to develop the environment, social norms, religious differences, political issues and even details about food and clothing. The characters are also well-devloped with depth and character. The compelling plot of this mystery may be my favorite yet of the three I've enjoyed in the series.

The narrator, Sneer Mathan, was perfect as the storyteller and excellent at vocalizing different genders, accents and types of people.

Highly recommend this book!

Wonderful story and storytelling

I read the first two books in this series, but this is the first one I’ve listened to. Sneha Mathan does an excellent job and adds even more depth to the story. I plan to listen to the next one when it is available.

another great one in theseries

The narrator was terrific and the book itself though the plot a little "cozy" the best part is the history and descriptions given in the book about India during British rule. You could see in your mind's eye what she was describing. another great one!

I'll be lost until Perveen returns

It's such a rare exception when a series doesn't become dull because the author uses so much of the characters' histories as filler. I am grateful the author trusts our intelligence to keep events and characters straight without deviation from the current storyline. It will not be a hardship for anyone to start the series at the beginning. I will be purchasing this series in print for several women for holiday gifts this year.

A great book, brilliantly performed

In addition to a true mystery, the background was wonderfully informative. Great writing style. Interesting perspective on multiculturalism, performed totally convincingly.
