Love his podcast; this book’s just OK

Short book that didn’t allow much depth to any of the characters. Interesting twist at the end.

Historia
Flannery O’Connor’s astonishing and haunting first novel is a classic of 20th-century literature. It is the story of Hazel Motes, a 22-year-old caught in an unending struggle against his innate, desperate faith. He falls under the spell of a “blind” street preacher named Asa Hawks and his degenerate fifteen-year-old daughter. In an ironic, malicious gesture of his own non-faith, and to prove himself a greater cynic than Hawks, Hazel founds The Church of God Without Christ but is still thwarted in his efforts to lose God.

Deep Story...Needed a Decoder to Understand
Revisado: 12-26-20
Had heard that Flannery O'Connor was an important author so I gave this book a try. Didn't like it very much; had to use "LitCharts" to understand what I'd just listened to. This is a deep story with symbolism upon symbolism, not something I've ever enjoyed reading. After reading two reviews, I'm still unsure what the author's point was. On the other hand, after listening to over 100 books on Audible, this was the absolute-best narration I've heard.

Historia
C. S. Lewis's dazzling allegory about Heaven and Hell - and the chasm fixed between them - is one of his most brilliantly imaginative tales, where we discover that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon in Hell and embarks on an incredible voyage to Heaven. Anyone in Hell is invited on board, and anyone may remain in Heaven if he or she so chooses. But do we really want to live in Heaven?

Really, Really Good
Revisado: 09-13-20
I have difficulty getting through Lewis’ non-fiction (he’s obviously way smarter than me) but this work, along with Screwtape, is eminently understandable and resounds in meaning. Masterfully narrated. Caused a lot of self-reflection and, I believe, will make me a better person.

Joan of Arc's life and her accomplishments, as seen through the eyes of her childhood friend, are described with irony and brilliant insight into human nature. This was Twain's last book and he considered it to be his best.

Pleasantly Surprised: Mark Twain’s Serious Treatment of Joan of Arc
Revisado: 07-11-20
Didn’t know if Twain would write on this subject sarcastically, comically, or whimsically. Was pleasantly surprised he wrote of Joan of Arc with great respect. Expertly narrated. Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Historia
Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made Michael Lewis' work possible.

Fascinating Topic but a Difficult Audiobook
Revisado: 03-28-20
Story was compelling. Narration outstanding. But, for me a least, the subject matter lends itself much better to the written word. Just finished listening on my second attempt to get through it, because I thought it was important information. I can’t tell you, though, how many times I had to hit the Rewind button. Some material was dense stuff and my undersized brain couldn’t absorb the spoken word—as well as it was spoken—the first time. Next time, I’ll buy the book.

Historia
The Iran hostage crisis was a watershed moment in American history. It was America's first showdown with Islamic fundamentalism, a confrontation at the forefront of American policy to this day. It was also a powerful dramatic story that captivated the American people, launched yellow-ribbon campaigns, made celebrities of the hostage's families, and crippled the reelection campaign of President Jimmy Carter.

Learned (and remembered) a lot
Revisado: 02-02-20
I was just graduated from college in November 1979 and recall the daily count of “days of captivity” on the nightly news. Didn’t understand, nor care about, the back story on the Shah...only that our country had been humiliated. Reading this book 40 years later provides a well-rounded and thoughtful perspective on the ordeal. And listening to the author read his own story was a plus.

Historia
My Years with General Motors became an instant best seller when it was first published in 1963. It has since been used as a manual for managers, offering personal glimpses into the practice of the "discipline of management" by the man who perfected it. This is the story no other businessman could tell - a distillation of half a century of intimate leadership experience with a giant industry and an inside look at dramatic events and creative business management.

Great history of the US auto industry
Revisado: 11-02-19
I’d heard this was an important book on management. I found that to be true. So many examples of innovating in an unknown field; I never even thought about the issues he faced...most challenges he faced are things we’ve long taken for granted. Some chapters were a little dry and I sympathized with the narrator at times. But overall a good book that will make you think about the field of organizational management and force you to ask yourself, “What would I have done?”

A Tough Book to Get Through
Revisado: 05-27-19
This was my 83rd Audible title. And the second book I just couldn't complete. The first part, about Ray's life, was interesting, but the second and third parts, listening to laundry lists of his principles, was simply too hard to take. No doubt his principles are well founded and quite valuable, but listening simply became a chore and, with 3.5 hours left, I gave it up.

Revisado: 08-11-18
Heard of the Phillip Marlowe character from a podcast. Not something I normally listen to, I decided to give the initial book in the series a try. Complicated story that sometimes gets a little hard to follow; thank goodness for Spark Notes. I recommend the book.
