Acerca de esta escucha
Joan of Arc's life and her accomplishments, as seen through the eyes of her childhood friend, are described with irony and brilliant insight into human nature. This was Twain's last book and he considered it to be his best.

Historia
Very few people know that Mark Twain wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important, but also his best work. He spent 12 years in research and many months in France doing archival work, and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell.

The English-speaking peoples comprise perhaps the greatest number of human beings sharing a common language in the world today. These people also share a common heritage. For his four-volume work, Sir Winston Churchill took as his subject these great elements in world history. Volume 1 commences in 55BC, when Julius Caesar famously "turned his gaze upon Britain" and concludes with the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Captains Courageous is Rudyard Kipling’s classic fable of a boy’s initiation into the fellowship of men, played out on the high seas of the late 1800s. When he falls overboard from a luxury liner, Harvey Cheyne, the spoiled son of an American millionaire, is rescued by a small New England fishing schooner. To earn his keep, Harvey must prove his worth in the only way the skipper and his hardy crew will accept: through the grueling mastery of a fisherman’s skills.

Historia
Here is an extraordinary portrait of one of the most complicated - and misunderstood - figures among the Founding Fathers. In 1804, while serving as vice president, Aaron Burr fought a duel with his political nemesis, Alexander Hamilton, and killed him. In 1807, he was arrested, tried, and acquitted of treason. In 1833, Burr is newly married, an aging statesman considered a monster by many. But he is determined to tell his own story, and he chooses to confide in a young New York City journalist. Burr is the first novel in Gore Vidal's Narratives of Empire series.

Historia
Most historians, both ancient and modern, have viewed the Late Republic of Rome through the eyes of its rich nobility - the one percent of the population who controlled 99 percent of the empire's wealth. In The Assassination of Julius Caesar, Michael Parenti recounts this period, spanning the years 100 to 33 BC, from the perspective of the Roman people. In doing so, he presents a provocative, trenchantly researched narrative of popular resistance against a powerful elite.

While on holiday in 1925, four-year-old Michael Tolkien lost his beloved toy dog on the beach at Filey in Yorkshire. To console him, his father, J.R.R. Tolkien, improvised a story about Rover, a real dog who is magically transformed into a toy and is forced to seek out the wizard who wronged him in order to be returned to normal. This charming tale, peopled by a sand-sorcerer and a terrible dragon, by the king of the sea and the Man-in-the-Moon, went through several drafts over the years.

Historia
War and Peace is one of the greatest monuments in world literature. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the relationship between the individual and the relentless march of history. Here are the universal themes of love and hate, ambition and despair, youth and age, expressed with a swirling vitality which makes the story as accessible today as it was when it was first published in 1869.

Historia
Historians have long whispered that Elizabeth "the Virgin Queen's" passionate, lifelong affair with Robin Dudley, Earl of Leicester, may have led to the birth of a son, Arthur Dudley. In this exquisite sequel to The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn, Robin Maxwell fashions a stunning fictional account of the child switched at birth by a lady-in-waiting who foresaw the deleterious political consequences of a royal bastard.

Historia
Joan's story almost feels like a novel instead of a part of history. She was a shining savior on a warhorse, waving her white banner and calling her soldiers forth to victory; but she was also painfully and intensely human, a young girl who wept and bled just the same as the rest of us. In the same breath, it is as easy to relate to Joan as it is to be awed by her incredible character. She may have been beatified as a saint, but Joan of Arc was in many ways a very ordinary human being, a person who felt pain and fear, a person who made mistakes, and who had moments of weakness.

Historia
In the chaos of 14th-century England and France, wine is the nectar of angels - a valuable commodity buttressing kingdoms and vaulting vast fortunes. A mysterious old archer named David Arrowsmith recounts his tale to an eager French chronicler, Jean Créton, when the latter learns that his mission to Scotland seems a failure. The burden of Arrowsmith's story rests with Créton, who suddenly finds himself writing about a seemingly cursed infant that barely escapes the grip of the Black Death in rural Wales when his family dies.

Historia
When first published in 1759, Candide became an instant best seller and is now regarded as one of the key texts of the Enlightenment. Voltaire’s preoccupations with evil and with various kinds of human folly and intolerance found a perfect vehicle in this philosophical tale. A master storyteller, he combined often wildly entertaining action with profoundly serious sense, parodying the traditional chivalric and oriental tales with which his public was more familiar.

One of the most important books ever written
Without a doubt, God inspired Joan of Arc, and also without a doubt, God inspired Mark Twain to write this book. What an amazing life and a tragic end. Of course, a life such as Joan led must be sealed by her death to preserve her testimony and protect her faithfulness for all time and eternity. What an example of faithfulness. The only other book I have listened to on par with this kind of faith is "God's Smuggler" by Brother Andrew. Amazing stories. Wonderful narrator as well.

An easy read
All along the story, from the point of view of Joan's friend, we come with, but reading the ending was hard. I took a month pause before going to the final chapters.

A enjoyable recount of an inspiring figure
A recounting of the life of Joan of Arc by master story teller Mark Twain, who adds more personality and attachment than a professor recounting history could. The narrative is presented in a clear, entertaining and personal way, we follow Joan throughout her journey through the eyes of a friend.
From her simple upbringing in a village, she was clever, rational, caring and devout. Given a mission from God this simple girl would lead the French army to many victories only to be betrayed and unjustly persecuted.
It does a good job showing how a girl of 17 manage to convince a king and officers to let her lead troops. Then shows how her actions and deeds inspired her troops and eventually a country. Yet never forgetting to remind us that she is just young girl given an extraordinary responsibility.
While necessary, the military campaign covered is long and is the weakest part as I wanted to just get through it. Personally I found the trials at the end the gem of the book and her life. We see how this uneducated girl, without any counsel, put through physical and mental extremes is able to survive and outwit numerous attacks on her character and action. Despite multiple trails with the opposition using tricks, deceit and extreme prejudice actions that is mind boggling to believe. With history as foresight we get to see what was really going on.
If your curious about Joan of Arc, like European history, trials, period pieces or personal journey of an inspiring figure, give it a read.

Pleasantly Surprised: Mark Twain’s Serious Treatment of Joan of Arc
Didn’t know if Twain would write on this subject sarcastically, comically, or whimsically. Was pleasantly surprised he wrote of Joan of Arc with great respect. Expertly narrated. Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Splendid history through master storytelling
I was pleased to discover this book by Mark Twain; I had not known about it until recently. Writing as if he was translating the memoirs of Louis De Conte, Joan of Arc's page and secretary, Twain weaves her history and legend together in a beautiful story. And, he does it complete with the humor, satire, and biting commentary you would expect from Twain. The narrator, Grover Gardner, plays the part of eyewitness convincingly. One of the best read books I've heard in a while.

Really excellent!
I was very surprised to learn this book was written by Mark Twain given the subject matter.. But I found it absolutely entrancing.
I guess i never paid attention in history class, because I knew next to nothing about Joan of Arc before I listened to this book. What a story!
This was a wonderful book of a true historical character, written with much detail. Reads more like a novel than a history book.
Just lovely.
I am a huge Twain fan, but this is certainly my favorite and I see why many consider it his best. I am one of those.
Grover Gardner does an excellent job as narrator. I remember complaining a bit about his voice in the first book I listened to him narrate. But I have changed my mind on him and become a fan of his, too. Great job Grover!

Captivating
The narration in this audiobook was my absolute favorite. The subtle changes in his tone were perfectly applied to each character without being overdone once. The story of Joan of Arc will live with me forever.

Poignant and Powerful!
What love God has us! This masterful telling of the amazing St. Joan of Arc captures the depth, height, scope and transcendent work of God’s Will in a soul so receptive to Him. It also speaks volumes of the despair, horror and treachery that the human will is capable of when separated from God’s Light and Live. A wonderful voice by Grover Gardner, too! 💕💥
