Historia
For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Enlightening and Interesting
Revisado: 02-21-25
Peter Zeihan is a pathfinder. He has a knack for weaving together a compelling and interesting story and drawing attention to the grand trends across history. This book is thoroughly researched. I really liked how he went all the way back to human origins for each section and shewed the progression over time. It makes the current and future state so much clearer. There is an inevitability of demographics and geography. Humans play a role in the world stage but much smaller than we sometimes think. I’ve already subscribed to his newsletter and will be reading all of his books.

The final book of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove tetralogy is an exhilarating tale of legend and heroism. Captain Woodrow Call, August McCrae's old partner, is now a bounty hunter hired to track down a brutal young Mexican bandit. Brutal yet human
Revisado: 01-25-25
If you liked Lonesome Dove, you’ll appreciate the continuation of the story. McMurtry is a skilled storyteller. The characters are so well developed and the scenes vivid. He doesn’t use many words, but the way he puts together the story makes it come alive. Totally engrossing and could easily be transitioned to the screen.
This story picks ups several years after the Hat Creek outfit. There are some familiar characters and a few new ones. The storyline pulls you in and it was hard to pause. The narrator really added to the story. His voices of the characters and the conversation brought another layer of life.

Historia
Twilight of the Gods is a riveting account of the harrowing last year of World War II in the Pacific, when the US Navy won the largest naval battle in history; MacArthur made good his pledge to return to the Philippines; waves of kamikazes attacked the Allied fleets; the Japanese fought to the last man on one island after another; B-29 bombers burned down Japanese cities; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were vaporized. Toll's narratives of combat in the air, at sea, and on the beaches are gripping, but he also takes the listener into the halls of power in Washington and Tokyo.

Sweeping and total
Revisado: 01-25-25
The final in a sweeping trilogy. Other sources, the author uses, may be more scoped and deeper, but this weaves a richer tapestry that covers all perspectives. The author also covers aspects well beyond military. The economic, social, political, and industrial considerations covered are staggering in their impact.
The author mentions his desire to cover additional topics not explored in earlier books. That made this book a little harder to follow and interrupted the flow slightly. But it was still an amazing project that incorporated details of the human factors in combat all the way up to high geo-political and national strategic considerations.

Historia
The devastation of Pearl Harbor and the American victory at Midway were prelude to a greater challenge: rolling back the vast Japanese Pacific empire island by island. This masterful history encompasses the heart of the Pacific War - the period between mid-1942 and mid-1944 - when parallel Allied counteroffensives north and south of the equator washed over Japan's far-flung island empire like a "conquering tide", concluding with Japan's irreversible strategic defeat in the Marianas.

Sweeping yet detailed
Revisado: 11-13-24
This is a superb follow up to Ian Toll’s first book on the Pacific War, “The Pacific Crucible”. The book truly does justice to the epic and sweeping campaign in an environment that is the same. It is comprehensive, covering geopolitical and civilian impact of the war. Yet, it is balanced with the grim details of battle at sea, on land and in the air. There are military histories that cover parts of this war in more detail, but none that weave an entire tapestry. Looking forward to finishing the trilogy.

Face pace yet deep
Revisado: 08-28-24
This was a very technical science fiction and gave some great cultural insights to Chinese thoughts about the past and future. It reminded me of Asimov’s “Foundation” series. There is a lot of detail that create a feeling of realism and palpable tension. The characters are rich and the world building is deep. It was a good start to the series.

Historia
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry.

Natural talent isn’t everything
Revisado: 07-28-24
Another home run by Isaacson. His biographies are deep, well researched, and engaging. He is a skillful storyteller and the book is well paced. It was difficult to follow along with the descriptions of paintings. But the main thing that stood out was the genius of Leonardo was cultivated. It wasn’t pure natural talent. The talent of Da Vinci was the raw material but his experiences and work ethic honed that talent. Timing is another key factor that played a role. Would the same thing happen today? Doubtful

Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon.

Better than another “life-hack” self help book
Revisado: 05-29-24
Not what I expected from the title. As a productivity geek, and nearing (probably) a mid-life crisis I thought I would get a list of practical things to do. Maybe a better version of some life hacks. Maybe something to help me fill the jar with big rocks, pebbles and the sand too. This book is definitively not that.
The author skillfully compiles insights from across cultures and timespans. He presents his argument in an accessible way and makes connections that are truly eye opening. Nothing is entirely earth shattering, and you’ll want to go read some of the primary sources to be sure. But, maybe it will be life shattering in a good way if some of the ideas and principles are applied.
I’ve often thought some of these life-hacker books are dribble. Or that everyone is basically just winging it. There is no finished and fully realized human life. There is no work-life balance. There is just life. This book by Burkeman captures those sentiments and provides a call to action, but not a checklist of “5 weird tricks to…”.
I’ll definitely keep a hard copy of this one for future reference.

Our current definition of “productivity” is broken. It pushes us to treat busyness as a proxy for useful effort, leading to impossibly lengthy task lists and ceaseless meetings. We’re overwhelmed by all we have to do and on the edge of burnout, left to decide between giving into soul-sapping hustle culture or rejecting ambition altogether. But are these really our only choices?

Practical, useful, and insightful.
Revisado: 05-09-24
This model is good and desperately needed in the rush of busyness today. Do less, work at a natural pace, obsess about quality. Key fundamentals that are probably known, but this is one of the few books that stitches them together cohesively and gives practical examples of how to implement.
Reminded me of a quote, “don’t mistake enthusiasm for capability.” With enthusiasm you can be in constant motion and look productive on the surface. With real capability, you hone skills, take time to think, and focus of producing quality useful things.
The author does a great job providing examples to show the principles he talks about. He also provides caveats and doesn’t claim this is a “self-help” magic bullet. Combined with “Work Clean” by Dan Charla’s, this book will be on my shelf and referenced frequently. I’ve already begun thinking how I can use the tools and apply them to my work.

Looking to some of the world's greatest thinkers and inspiring leaders, Brooks explores how, through internal struggle and a sense of their own limitations, they have built a strong inner character. Labor activist Frances Perkins understood the need to suppress parts of herself so that she could be an instrument in a larger cause. Dwight Eisenhower organized his life not around impulsive self-expression but considered self-restraint.

Wrestle with big ideas
Revisado: 12-31-23
What a book to finish the year 2023! It’s an interesting premise that western society has lost the ability to describe a moral ecology. The author proposes the crooked timber school of thought, that every human is flawed and needs external help to confront our own sin or failings to strive for a virtuous life. Through several varied and unique exemplars he shows the reader a mosaic of historical figures. They serve as the backdrop to glean some fundamental truths.
This book is not a self-help, “7 steps to happiness” or “10 hacks to success” type of treatment. It is not histrionic nor future-phobic. The author provides concrete examples to wrestle with some big ideas and hopefully inspire people to wrestle with themselves for the betterment of all.

Amazing story behind the scenes
Revisado: 07-12-23
Wow! This was an amazing story, well told and narrated. The Skunk Works is well known, but this provides a perspective from the people that were a part of it. It pulls the curtain back on some highly secretive efforts to build advanced technologies and the personalities, leadership, and lives of those that made it happen. Some of it was technical, but not overly complicated. There are some real hidden nuggets of wisdom and lessons to be learned for organizational change and innovation.
