Historia
The Man on the Mountaintop tells the story of Holy Man Joe, an ageing and unassuming man who lives in a hermitage on top of a mountain. During the summer months, thousands of hopefuls line the path leading to his door, seeking his wisdom. From bombastic, wealthy nobles intent on cheating their way to the top to drunkards who gradually build the physical and mental strength they need to quit their addiction, The Man on the Mountaintop is a rousing tale full of humour, wit and life lessons.

Amazing sound mixing, and excellent direction. It's a nice touch to have sound effects to take you to the mountain. Story is a little cheesy, but has a hopeful message, almost like a meditation how-to in the form of a far-fetched tale....a spiritual, not religious, parable.

only got it because I loved American Gods
Revisado: 04-24-20
The first story was so repetitive and boring and had such a blah ending. Ugh. 2 stars. The second story was intriguing, well narrated, just what I wanted from Neil Gaiman, a little extra American Gods in my life - 5 stars. The third story was a hopeful story, quality narration - 4 stars.

Historia
Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

I adore Gaiman and now, I adore Lenny Henry. I kept forgetting that the same man was reading all of the characters! Engrossing, witty, thought provoking story with a brilliant narrator. I'm enjoying this American Gods kick I'm on so much that I just got Black Dog on Kindle.

I didn't realize when I bought this version that there were versions with a full cast of actors...but I'm very happy that I heard it in the author's (lovely) voice. It was addictive. This was my first Neil Gaiman experience of many!

Historia
This live performance of a powerful police procedural comes to life through the artistry of Celeste Lecesne and is accompanied by the original music of Duncan Sheik. Celeste portrays every character in a small Jersey Shore town as they unravel the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14-year-old boy who has gone missing. A luminous force of nature whose magic is only truly felt once he is gone, Leonard becomes an unexpected inspiration as the town’s citizens question how they live, who they love, and what they leave behind.

Changed my perspective
Revisado: 02-28-19
Fascinating. I tend to feel resistant/skeptical about religion but I truly believe in what Dr. Hew Len teaches...we are all connected, our thoughts & our actions shape our reality, etc. Joe Vitale seems like the opposite of Dr. Hew Len...it's weird to hear him talk about fancy cars & deeper spirituality helping him get them. But if this is the best way to learn what Dr. Hew Len is teaching, I'll take it.

Finally, a housekeeping and organizational system developed for those of us who'd describe our current living situation as a "f--king mess" that we "really need to get around to fixing one day". Unf--k Your Habitat is for anyone who has been left behind by traditional aspirational systems - the ones that ignore single people with full-time jobs, people without kids but living with roommates, and people with mental illnesses or physical limitations. Most organizational books are aimed at stay-at-home moms and people who seem to have unimaginable amounts of free time.

That's what I've been looking for
Revisado: 02-04-19
Some people bashed Marie Kondo in their reviews but I appreciate getting different perspectives. Marie Kondo is like a joy-sparking spiritual guide & Rachel Hoffman is like a come-to-jesus cleaning coach. Hoffman's book is amazing...it's about cleaning, but it addresses bullshit gender norms, mental health, physical abilities. She admits that cleaning sucks! Finally! She also reminds us that a) cleaning is never "done", b) it doesn't mean you're worthless if you haven't taken the trash out/done the dishes for a week, but you can change if you want to! It was just the *compassionate* kick in the rear I needed while doing a deep clean. I'll definitely refer back to it.

Probably a better read than listen
Revisado: 12-29-18
Rachel Hollis has a very inspiring life story. She's been through a lot but she has fought to make her dreams come true & make the most of life, & her approachability & vulnerability & charm make this a motivational book.
Personally, I don't love it...when it was recommended to me, nobody mentioned how much she mentions God/Christianity. She tries to be inclusive, & make her message apply to every woman, I felt more distanced from her story since I'm not Christian & not a mother. That, plus her whiney voice. She sounds much more natural in the end credits when she's speaking candidly, instead of reading the text. She gets to this passionate, yelling, dramatic plea at the end of most chapters & I found it less inspiring & more cringey.
