Delightful Story
Revisado: 03-12-24
I enjoyed this book, it is a delightful story, some history, but not what I would consider a historical novel. The narrator is an excellent story teller. Very few times do I actually react to a book, some have made me shed tears, but I actually whooped when the villain “got theirs”, but I do not want to spoil it…. I recommend this for light reading (listening) just to relax and enjoy the story.

Historia
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

Historia
In 1944, the big top of Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus in Hartford caught fire during the middle of an afternoon performance. Nine thousand people were inside. In seconds, the big top was burning out of control. The toll of the fire, and its circumstances, haunt Hartford to the present day. But it is the intense, detailed narrative - before, after, and especially during the panic under the burning tent - that will remain with listeners long after they finish this book.

Heartbreaking Story Respectfully Told
Revisado: 02-03-23
This is an obscure tragedy from American history. Stewart O’Nan tells the complete story of the tragedy without getting bogged down in politics. He is graphic when necessary, but not so much to upset. He introduces you to the people, the survivors and the victims. Little Miss 1565 is a beautiful little girl that was never ID, he addresses this and finally identifies her. Dick Hill does a wonderful reading, changing his tone to fit the dramatic story. Well written and beautifully read.

Historia
On March 25, 1911, as workers were getting ready to leave for the day, a fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in New York's Greenwich Village. Within minutes it spread to consume the building's upper three stories. Firemen who arrived at the scene were unable to rescue those trapped inside: their ladders simply weren't tall enough. People on the street watched in horror as desperate workers jumped to their deaths. It was the worst disaster in New York City history.

History of Politics
Revisado: 01-31-23
I was hoping to get a more personal history of the victims, the condition, and the tragedy, of the fire. Instead it was a history lesson on New York politics. If you want history concerning the unions, graft, and unscrupulous civic leaders, this is the book for you. The one chapter that covers the fire was well written and heartbreaking.

Historia
Thomas atte Bridge, a man no one likes, is found hanging from a tree near Cowleys Corner. All assume he has taken his own life, but Master Hugh and Kate find evidence that this may not be so. Many of the town had been harmed by Thomas, and Hugh is not eager to send one of them to the gallows. Then he discovers that the priest John Kellet, atte Bridge’s partner in crime in A Corpse at St. Andrew’s Chapel, was covertly in Bampton at the time atte Bridge died.

Great Series
Revisado: 10-01-21
I love the Steven Sailor series about Rome, Sub Rosa, so it was great to find a series set in medieval England. The books keeps your attention, the reader is excellent, with his expressiveness and different voices he uses.

Historia
A few minutes before midnight on April 14, 1912, the "unsinkable" RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage to New York, struck an iceberg. Less than three hours later she lay at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. While the world has remained fascinated by the tragedy, the most amazing drama of those fateful hours was not played out aboard the doomed liner. It took place on the decks of two other ships, one 58 miles distant from the sinking Titanic, the other barely 10 miles away.

Factually Disturbing
Revisado: 01-28-20
Very well written, gives a huge amount of history, yet is entertaining in a disturbing way. The story of two men, one a coward and one a unassuming hero. At times I marveled at the different human natures recounted in this book.
This reading is well preformed, I will listen to it again.

I enjoyed the story, it is a bittersweet tell of a woman’s everyday struggle with things we take for granted. How difficult life was for our ancestors, makes you appreciate simple things like food, warmth, and being clean.

loved
Revisado: 12-28-14
I have loved the movie for so long and never read the book, after "reading" the book it gives a new understanding to the movie. I love both now and highly recommend them. It also helps me understand the Ole South, the one my great grandmother and grandma use to tell me about. The story is fiction, but the manners and way of thinking are real, both in the grace of the time and horror of the way a race of people were treated.
