Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford.
A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.
From there the tale unfolds, with graphic medical procedures, droll medieval wit, misdirection, ambition, romantic distractions, and a consistent underlying Christian compassion.

SURPRISE!!
What a wonderful surprise and pleasure it was listening to this story! I am a hardcore mystery, thriller, BIG NAME DETECTIVE AND HERO type listener. This book was well written, the story extremely entertaining and SMART and the main character was just GREAT! You could use much fancier words...just listen and enjoy.

Surprise
I was skeptical at first, but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. I loved medieval books when I was a teenager, but had very much gotten away from that genre. This made me excited to go back and hear more! Thank you for a great bunch!

Brother Cadfael's Cousin
I enjoyed listening to this book, which was well narrated. Nothing to distract the listener. I am also a fan of the Brother Cadfael series, so I was happy to stumble on this series on Audible. I've only so far listened to the first book, finding it slight more complex in structure and medical descriptions. The story was good and the characters likable. I will move on to the next few books!

Love this Series
I love this series. The books are historical accurate, entertaining stories. You have a mystery inner twined with the life story of Huge. Well written, well preformed, looking forward to each additional book.

805 Wonderful!
I’m not sure what happened in the last two chapters, but the first 90% of the book I found absolutely delightful. Great story, moves along I had a nice pace. You may want to turn the narration speed up to 1.1, it is a little slow, and I don’t know what happened in the last two chapters. I literally rewound to make sure I hadn’t missed some thing or a chapter for that perhaps they were giving me a free preview of a different book. Still totally worth it.
