Courage, Determination, Love
After reading two WWII historical fiction books by this author, I decided to give this one a try. Wow!! I am immensely glad I did! This is a modern day (within the last couple of decades) story of children being kidnapped and forced into child soldiers/killers/sex slaves for a psychopath and his brainwashed legions of followers. Because these events happened during the same time as I grew from teen to adulthood, marriage, and children, each date that was given I would think about what my life was like compared to the atrocities happening a world away. We Americans can be so oblivious to the suffering of others, especially before the age of the internet and cell phones. Thank you for telling this powerful story of Florence and Antony.

I really liked that the character of the principals didn’t change, even under tremendous duress. My only downer was in the afterward, when the author sought donations for the organization to assist child fighters.

Heartbreaking and Overwhelmingly Sweet
I don’t know how a book can rip your heart out so many times while still making you cry tears of joy so often. Amazing characters and storytelling, only to find out it’s based on real events!

Best book I’ve read this year!
Amazing true story of children abducted and forced into serving as soldiers in the LRA. Deeply moving testament to the will to survive and to truly “be good humans.”

I sincerely enjoyed the narrator, the incredible story and the lessons in history. I have read Sullivan’s other books and knew I would love this one too! A story of love, resilience, and strength…Just read it!

The Truth
Of course, I knew about the strife in Sudan. But, did I really? Mark Sullivan is one of my favorite authors, and he came through this time in spades. Horrific tale of stolen children, the lives of child soldiers, the mind bending, and crimes against humanity… Absolutely NOT an easy read, but it is a story that must be told. Over and over.
