Acerca de esta escucha

Rebecca Davis promises to raise her dying sister's newborn son as her own. She also agrees to help a female slave reach freedom. It's the right thing to do, but can she trust her fellow conspirators without endangering her future or her son? Her handsome contact, Jared Hollingsworth, won't discuss their mission, but her attraction to him has Rebecca fearing she will endanger not only her freedom--but her heart. Jared Hollingsworth refuses to use slave labor. Despite this sentiment, he's been able to keep his plantation going, even while mourning the death of his wife and son. Now, thanks to his notorious cousin, Jared is in danger of losing Oak Hill. When he meets Rebecca Davis, he isn't ready to love again, but she may be just what he needs to save his home and his heart. When he discovers Rebecca embroiled in a conspiracy, will he follow his heart and dare to love again? Or will he risk her heart to save his beloved plantation?

Rebecca & Jared

This was a book I had no trouble listening to the plot had a enough action and romance to satisfy that part of my soul and enough action and adventure as well. The research into pre civil war life in the south was quite good although I did have a couple of little niggles. Rebecca is bringing up her sisters baby as her own, never having been married but is not ostracised by "polite society"? Jared's plantation is put at risk by fraudulent IOU's, surely as he can prove he didn't sign them Oak Hill would be safe? Would a young single mother put her life at risk to reunite a stranger with her family?

Niggles aside I did enjoy the book. The storyline is both romantic and paints a picture of life at that time. Rebecca and Jared meet at a mutual friends wedding, Jared is there because he is a friend of the groom and Rebecca is there as a friend of the bride. Jared having shown no interest in any woman since becoming a widower finds Rebecca both interesting and attractive. They talk and agree to meet again.

Their love story builds slowly but steadily and I for one really liked them as a couple. The characterisation by the author is well done, you feel you are really getting to know all the players in the story. This is not just Rebecca & Jared's story it features her aunt, who undergoes a total character transformation during the book. It features too the town doctor and Rory, Jared's disreputable cousin.

As the book progressed I found myself totally immersed in it and I so wanted everything to work out. The blurb tells you what to expect and I have told you a little more, I would love to add to the review but I really don't want to spoil this book for you. What I will say is that there are twists and turns to the story and it is beautifully performed by Karen Rose Richter, the nuances she brought to every character and the inflections in her voice so added to my total immersion and enjoyment of this book.

I was given this audio book as a gift and I am voluntarily writing this review which contains only my own personal opinions.

Southern Bell is Spy and Faux Mom Meets Man

Rebecca goes on a trip with the combined goals of being an underground railroad operative, freeing a slave, and to attend an old classmate's wedding, with her faux son and overly protective aunt in tow.

This is the first book of this author's I read. I would have enjoyed more development and detail on the spy sub-plot, but loved this story of the old South. One explicit sex scene.

The narrator was great and did male voices well. But, I think this story screamed for a Southern accent.

Pleasant Story

I received this audiobook at my request and am voluntarily leaving this review.

Becoming Rebecca is a pleasant story. It uses unlikely coincidence a little too much sometimes (how many times is one person going to be mistaken for another?). But it also goes in unexpected directions at several significant points. I especially enjoyed the unexpected romance for Aunt Josephine. There are one or two minor anachronisms, but they did not detract from the storyline.

I am forced to deduct one star from the story because there was no warning about the explicit sex scenes late in the book. That really should have been disclosed in the description.

pretty good

I believe she has the potential to hold her own against the "big wigs" in the historical romance genre. The book was well written, the plot interesting, the characters likable and ... here's the big one ... it was actually edited well.

Rebecca and Jared

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Rebecca comes to Jackson for a friend’s wedding and to help an escaped slave find her way to her family. There, she is introduced to Jared and sparks fly right away. Through a series of misunderstandings, Rebecca keeps leaving Jared confused and suspicious. She made a huge deal about keeping him out of the escaped slave smuggling business and refused his proposal rather than just being a grown up and just saying “yes, but not quite yet!” It seems like a bit of it was over-manufactured. The story itself was good and Jared was as loyal and sweet as could be.

The narrator was what I would call a “reader” and not an “actress”. Oh she tried here and there to add some emotion here and there. But for the most part, she was reading the way she would recite it. I think it took away a bit from the overall enjoyment of the story.

Good story and nice romance

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review

With her sisters dying wish, Moria asks Rebecca to take her new born son and raise as her own with one promise, never let the father meet him. Rebecca agrees.

Rebecca Davis becomes a mother to her sisters son, much to the chagrin of her Aunt Josephine, a very uptight religious person, who believes Moria got what she deserved for having a child out of wed lock.

Rebecca has another job as well, she help escaped slaves reach freedom. When Rebecca attends her best friends wedding, she believes she meets her rendezvous contact by the flower that he wears.. (she doesn't), but not all is lost, because she falls in love with him.

This was a good story, set in the the 1800's south. There is some romance, misunderstandings, intrigue and some other stuff too.

Karen Rose Richter's performance was very good and enjoyed listening to the story. It went by quite quickly for being 8 hours.

Love it!

I like the backdrop of the story. It is set in 1857 in Memphis and Jefferson. People in that era are courteous and elegant at large. I like their 19th century vocabulary reflected in conversations. Rebecca is a kind-hearted woman who is so amiable and enchanting. I was so engrossed while I embarked on a journey with her.

Charming period romance adventure

The book is set in colonial America and features some forward-thinking, humane people who's lives interact. I was a little iffy starting out, on whether I'd like the book or not, but that concern was quickly put to rest as the characters and plot came alive.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, curious to see what would happen next and whether my thoughts on how things would turn out, would come true. Charmingly written with both feel-good and tension moments throughout.

I was give a code for an honest review

Very Sweet Romance - But definitely Adult Read

What did you love best about Because of Rebecca?

I loved the story line and the author did a great job with the character development. It started out a little sad but didn't stay that way through the book. It was a very enjoyable read and I will probably listen to it again.

Any additional comments?

Although I really enjoyed this one if I listen to it again I will be skipping a section or two. The book goes into the wedding night very graphically which I wasn't totally expecting the way the rest of the book had gone. Shown on any movie screen it would be at least R rated if not higher. This is not a book for teens or below.
