Historia
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Cyrus Spitama, grandson of the prophet Zoroaster and lifelong friend of Xerxes, spent most of his life as Persian ambassador for the great king Darius. He traveled to India, where he discussed nirvana with Buddha, and to the warring states of Cathay, where he learned of Tao from Master Li and fished on the riverbank with Confucius. Now blind and aged in Athens - the Athens of Pericles, Sophocles, Thucydides, Herodotus, and Socrates - Cyrus recounts his days as he strives to resolve the fundamental questions that have guided his life’s journeys.

The most influential work of the entire Spanish literary canon and a founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote is also one of the greatest works ever written. Hugely entertaining but also moving at times, this episodic novel is built on the fantasy life of one Alonso Quixano, who lives with his niece and housekeeper in La Mancha. Quixano, obsessed by tales of knight errantry, renames himself ‘Don Quixote’ and with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, goes on a series of quests.

First published in 1873, The Gilded Age is both a biting satire and a revealing portrait of post-Civil War America - an age of corruption when crooked land speculators, ruthless bankers, and dishonest politicians voraciously took advantage of the nation's peacetime optimism. With his characteristic wit and perception, Mark Twain and his collaborator, Charles Dudley Warner, attack the greed, lust, and naiveté of their own time in a work that endures as a valuable social document and one of America's most important satirical novels.

Trollope's classic novel features Reverend Septimus Harding, the elderly warden of the Barchester alms-house. However, for a man devoting himself to helping the poor, Reverend Harding's salary is rather lucrative. Aiming to ease his conscience and quiet his neighbors' whispers, he decides to divest himself of all the income he earns at the alms-house. But this decision causes unforeseen complications. The first of his Barsetshire series, this novel provides a detailed, gently satirical portrayal of 19th century British life.

Historia
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. Hard Times is Dickens's most political novel. Set in the industrial north of England, in Coketown, he examines the lives of working people, who are taught by the capitalists Gradgrind and Bounderby to think only of the facts of life and not to indulge in imagination. Gradgrind’s own children have been so educated and as a result are dysfunctional and disconnected from their feelings. Only the travelling circus company of Sleary seems to offer any hope of humanity in Coketown.

One of Dickens’ earlier works, dating from 1839, this novel charts the fortunes of an honorable young man, Nicholas Nickleby, who has set out to make his way in the world. Dickens - a Genius
Would you listen to Bleak House again? Why?
I am actually listening to it again and again, sampling some of my favorite chapters. Now that I understand the plot and the story, it is a thrill to go back and see how carefully strands were woven together and how masterly the descriptions and social commentary.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I had many favorite characters, among them, Guppy, Krook, and George.
Have you listened to any of Sean Barrett and Teresa Gallagher ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is my first one. I'd like to hear more.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wanted it to last as long as possible, so I lingered.. but it was gripping and a real "page turner".
Any additional comments?
I'm going to get more Dickens!

one of the best audiobooks available on audible
the text, of course, is classic; the virtuoso use of language adept to the point of wonder, the satire excoriating, the wit alternately light and scathing, the plot victorian, the lapses of sentimentality cloying
and the performances - you can’t just call this kind of voice acting ‘reading’ - completely do it justice: gallagher is spot on as esther summerson, the most complete of victorian heroines, and barrett is nothing less than brilliant; superb in narration, and inhabiting dickens’ caricatures, whether sympathetic or scorching, with a master’s touch

Great reading of a fabulous story
Would you consider the audio edition of Bleak House to be better than the print version?
Not better, but the good performances certainly enhanced and provided an excellent reading of a fantastic story.
Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett and Teresa Gallagher – was your favorite?
Teresa Gallagher's performance was lovely. Her voice is so melodic and her children's voices are just lovely. I especially loved Charley. And Sean Barrett was a perfect counterpoint to Ms Gallagher's voice. His dour British accent was exquistely, well, Dickenisian.

Superb narration, long novel
The versatility of the narrators is incredible. They do so many different voices and accents it often fells like there is a full cast. It is probably the best audiobook I've ever heard. The story itself was good, but it was too long and sometimes confusing. I am a Dickens fan, but this novel wasn't as engaging as his others.

Narration brings characters to life
At first the thought of reading a criticism of the legal system in England in the mid 1800s sounds bleak indeed.
I was taken by both of the narrators immediately. Teresa Gallagher made Esther's narrative lively, and Sean Barrett as the omnicient narrative did the same. As with many Dickens novels, "Bleak House" is full of fabulous characters (major and minor), dialogue and a story that twists and turns to its conclusion.
Expect a range of emotion, happiness, gratitude, shame and grief. Dickens' stories are classic and timeless.

Dickens at his best
Excellent performance with easy recognition of the many characters and some truly moving scenes.
Some expectedly extreme characters but by far the majority of the characters portray thoughts and emotions that readers can relate to despite the historical period of the book.

Dated but Delightful Dickens
As Bleak House has been on my bucket list for many years I've probably given it more stars because of the satisfaction felt at completion. Cultural changes reduce the impact of the multiple plots for the current reader and the evolution in language adds another level of difficulty. It's tempting to criticize his wordy depictions of everything as excessive but that is what gives us clarity and wonder at circumstances we may not otherwise believe. The performance on this version is excellent and I felt it really enhanced the story yet I needed to occasionally visit a printed version to review a definition or phrase and was then able to better enjoy the splendor of Dicken's words and wit. It was worthwhile work.
