Resumen del Editor

The sound. The suits. The sunglasses. The Blues Brothers have firmly cemented their place as pop-culture icons in the annals of entertainment history. But how did a band that debuted as a goofy sketch on Saturday Night Live in 1976 go on to have a hit movie and a number one record in the space of just four short years? Simple. They were “on a mission from God”.

Now, nearly 50 years later, Elwood Blues (aka Dan Aykroyd) is on another mission—to tell the full story of how two young actors went from blues lovers to Blues Brothers. In this fascinating audio documentary Aykroyd “gets the band back together”, taking listeners on a road trip through time—from late nights in the early days with John Belushi at Dan’s speakeasy in Toronto, to working with blues legends Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Ray Charles on The Blues Brothers movie, through the founding of House of Blues, the Blues Brothers 2000 sequel, and beyond.

Along the way, Aykroyd is joined by band members, friends, filmmakers, and cohorts who witnessed the Blues Brothers’ birth and meteoric rise firsthand, including Jim Belushi, Paul Shaffer, Curtis Salgado, John Landis, Steve Jordan, and more. Also featuring conversations with the late Judy Belushi Pisano, and a previously unheard interview with John Belushi himself.

Thoughtful, entertaining, and endlessly illuminating, Blues Brothers: The Arc of Gratitude is a joyous celebration of the legendary band that kick-started a blues revival and launched a lasting legacy.

Aykroyd was awarded an Emmy for his writing on the Saturday Night Live episode starring Sissy Spacek. He is also a Grammy and Oscar nominee. House of Blues was sold to Live Nation Entertainment in 2006.

Forever grateful

I remember being introduced to the blues brothers in 1987 and now even at the age of 43 in 2024 I can sit with my sons and enjoy the brothers. Thank you

I learned a lot

I’m from Chicago and knew of the Blues Brothers at a young age. It’s so interesting to hear the love that Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi had for the music. Good music is so universal and that comes across in this story. That foundational African American Delta Blues gave life to people across race. I loved learning about their commitment to not appropriate but to use their platform to honor those that inspired them and how that platform reinvigorated so many careers. This is indeed a version of what being an Ally or Accomplice for diversity and humanity looks like.

Origins and Legacy of the Blues Brothers, Masterfully Told

Best two hours I have spent with headphones on in a long time. As someone who attended high school from 1977 to 1980, the SNL Not Ready For Prime Time players and specifically John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd were greatly responsible for providing the foundation of any cultural awareness I ever achieved. (SNL made fun of everything.) While listening to Aykroyd's superb theatrical narration along with the excellent interviews of how the Blues Brothers came to be, I was struck by how authentic the subtitle of this audio book was with its reference to gratitude. Yes, the stories of musical and entertainment giants who were worshipped as living legends are fascinating, but what shines through is Aykroyd's voice thanking people for what they created over 40 years ago. Those entertainers recorded here express mutual appreciation for each other with a genuine fondness that I cannot recall in any other entertainment retrospect. And, yes, the Blues Brothers act did start me on a lifelong listening pursuit of all things blues. Highy recommend this one.

What an awesome insight into the birth and ride of The Blues Brothers and the mission to showcase and highlight the gift of music many great legends gave us and honoring them along the way.

A Tribute that makes me want more!

If I could get more Blues Brothers content I would take it. Even a third film if there was a good idea that dug out more artists that deserve to be archived. Even another Audible original that was about L wood searching the world for the remaining greats or a audio adventure that told a lot of good stories through the music.... or maybe someone goes on a search for L wood. Anyways this was great and now I need to go dig out the films / albums again.

An amazing story about the music and the legend of the Blues Brothers.

Danny Ackroyd does an amazing job of sharing so many inside stories of the incredible journey of him and John Belushi. Riveting in every way.
