Acerca de esta escucha

A thrilling collection of thirteen short stories that span the worlds of the New York Times bestselling author of the Scholomance trilogy, including a sneak peek at the land where her next novel will be set.

From the dragon-filled Temeraire series and the gothic magical halls of the Scholomance trilogy, through the realms next door to Spinning Silver and Uprooted, this stunning collection takes us from fairy tale to fantasy, myth to history, and mystery to science fiction as we travel through Naomi Novik’s most beloved stories. Here, among many others, we encounter:

• A mushroom witch who learns that sometimes the worst thing in the Scholomance can be your roommate.

• The start of the Dragon Corps in ancient Rome, after Mark Antony hatches a dragon’s egg and bonds with the hatchling.

• A young bride in the Middle Ages who finds herself gambling with Death for the highest of stakes.

• A delightful reimagining of Pride & Prejudice, in which Elizabeth Bennet captains a Longwing dragon.

• The first glimpse of the world of Abandon, the setting of Novik’s upcoming epic fantasy series—a deserted continent populated only by silent and enigmatic architectural mysteries.

Though the stories are vastly different, there is a unifying theme: wrestling with destiny, and the lengths some will go to find their own and fulfill its promise.

dragons!

Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Buried Deep and Other Stories by Naomi Novik in exchange for an honest review. This book is a collection of stories including one from the scholarmance and a few with dragons. I really liked the version of Pride and Prejudice with dragons, it seemed to really fit Elizabeth Bennett to fly a dragon.

Lovely stories!

Novik is a delightful writer. Half fairy story, half cautionary tale. She flips a story that seems to be going somewhere dreadful to something magical with great skill
Some of the accents were a bit much for me. But the stories are worthy.

Short story Spinning Silver is a gift to anyone who read the book

Short story Spinning Silver goes in a completely different direction than the book, yet no less fitting. Loved it! Also loved Dragons & Decorum, Vici, Seven Years - basically all the stories with satisfying ending. Sorry, my taste is not refined for the open ended ones

Outstanding collection!

This collection lets you explore the worlds of Naomi Novik and they’re completely fascinating. From the very first dragon rider, to the Scholomance, and so much more. Each reader did an excellent job with their story. I think my favorite is the retelling of Pride and Prejudice with dragons. Each story has interesting characters and setting. If you’re a fan of Naomi Novik or wanting to see what her worlds are like you can’t go wrong with picking up this book.

A good intro to Naomi Novik

First, the standalone stories are the absolute stars here. Seven Years from Home and what she’s working on for her new book are outstanding. Lauren Fortgang as a narrator is always excellent and she excelled in The Long Way Round- which I didn’t expect to like as much as I did. I’m going to be thinking about Seven Years From Home for a long time, in a good way.

The bad: Vici is good, but the other historical fantasy works were not my cup of tea and the Pride and Prejudice story was an absolute slog to get through. I also really disliked the short story on Irene Adler.

I think world building and true fantasy / sci fi are Novik’s strengths and so because of that, to me, the historical writings fell flat. I do recommend this collection though - I think it’s a good sampler platter to know what you’ll like from her and what you might not and I’m very interested to read more of some of her works.
