By far the best

Many, many years ago I attended the defense language Institute, one of the top language schools in the world. 30 years later I’ve decided to to learn Croatian for an upcoming trip. So I found these Pimsleur lessons on audible. I have to say, I’m so incredibly impressed! I do a lot of driving so I pop on my AirPods and play this on my phone every single day in the car. It’s easy with AirPods because you can just click your AirPod to pause the recording while you’re thinking of a phrase, then click to play again. The way they teach is incredible. It’s all auditory, which is really effective. Also, they teach you how to pronounce words backwards which is brilliant! I am so pleased and have been zipping through all my lessons.

Love Pimsleur Courses

Love using Pimsleur while traveling. In five easy lessons you’re able to show respect for the new culture by learning a bit of their language and it also opens more doors for you with the locals. Makes Audible an unbeatable value.

Great for first timers, boring for intermediate.

Very helpful in hearing distinctions in the pronunciation of hrvatski but I wish they could spell the words out every now and then.

Good, but needs more supplemental reading material

I agree in part with the Pimsleur method of learning language like a child learns, by listening and participation. But without additional reading material, the lessons can be difficult. It is sometimes difficult to tell how words are spelled, or if you are even hearing word pronounced correctly. I used Google Translate with each lesson to check my assumption and this helped immensely. Pimsleur should have included in the PDF document ALL conversations from all lessons, with translation to English. In order to communicate in any language you must be able to read it as well as speak it. There are, however, few options online for learning Croatian, so this option is still viable to get to a basic level of fluency. We really need more levels to obtain intermediate or advanced Croatian language skills.

Vi instead of Ti

“Ti” is not taught. Only “Vi” for “to be”. Its incredibly irritated and absolutely frustrating when I then talk to a Croatian and they say “No, only use “vi” to those older than you and in business, do not use it to me or the mass majority of people you meet.”

It is SO FRUSTRATING. I am trying to learn a new language and this has rendered so much chagrin that I stopped listening altogether and am now in a limbo as to how to learn Croatian if nobody making formal audiobooks is teaching it correctly.

Moves too quickly

This is the third Pimsleur language I’ve learned (others were Mandarin and German). The program is great and the same information was covered, however, it moved too quickly for me and I had to repeat every lesson.
