Reseñas de la Crítica

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)

Excellent and very effective introduction.

The slow syllable-by-syllable pronunciation is extremely effective, as is the graded progression and the structure whereby each lesson built on and reinforces previous lessons. What is the best audio tools for learning a new language I have ever used. However, it is audio only and I find it useful to supplement the audio instruction with written exercises, flashcards, etc.

Very instructive but the conversation framing urgently needs modernising!

It was a great way to learn some basic Greek while travelling the country. The extensive pronounciation training often lead to us being confused for Greeks when greeting someone. The repetitional method is very effective and provides you with a solid if not very large vocabulary in the end.
A big minus however is the conversation setting: a US American man (represented by the learner) calling over to an unmarried Greek woman to ask her for directions and then ask if she would like to eat/drink something. Seriously?! It was furthermore assumed that the listener is from the US, which is unnecessary.

Good introduction to spoken Greek

Overall, I really like the content. The quantity is about right, not too overwhelming. Thus, the content is digestible in the format provided.

Ultra formal

These lessons are good. However, they teach the ultra formal way of speaking with older people in a form of Greek that rarely gets used anymore, especially by younger Greeks. Some of the verbs such as to eat and to drink are different from the verbs used more commonly today

Good, but could be great!

It is good. However, it would be nice if the speaker could state whether (in English) certain words, phrases or syllables are synonymous with the English 'V' or 'th'. E.g is it Amerikaniva or Amerikanitha? It is e-ovos or e-othos? It makes a massive difference! Further, the difference in pronunciation by the female and male speaker sometimes assists one in being able to compare it with a syllable you know, though at other times it is actually the root of the confusion. Lastly, I feel the jump in Chapter 5 was a bit extreme. Notwithstanding the above, I am certain that (I can) and I definitely plan to finish learning Greek (entire series) with Pimsleur!

I struggled for years to learn Greek

I lived in Greece for 7 months and make annual visits to visit my relatives. No matter how hard I tried, I could not seem to learn this language. My objective was to be able to speak well enough that I didn't need an interpreter every where I went. I realized that all my previous lessons included a component of reading the language and knowing the alphabet. This is pure conversation - not difficult grammar, reading orwriting.. It seems to all come together for me in these lessons. I have only finished the first group of lessons but it is finally making sense. I highly recommend this way of learning for those that need a working knowledge while traveling through Greece.
