<患者を正しく怖がらせる医師が良医の条件>
最近、種々の雑誌社から、ヤブ医者と良医の見分け方についての取材依頼がきました。
自分自身がヤブかどうかの評価は別として、こんなことがいえるのではないでしょうか。
すなわち、「愛想がよく、患者にいいことばかりしかいわない医師のなかには、
ヤブ医者が潜んでいる可能性がある」ということです。
患者が医療機関を出てきたときに、「とてもいい先生だった」「とても安心した」と思った場合、
注意が必要なことが多いです。本来は適度な励ましの言葉がありながらも、
「こんな生活をしていたらダメだよ! 」
「この治療を受けた場合には、体にこんなデメリットも生じる可能性がある」
と、患者を正しく怖がらせる医師が良医の条件ではないでしょうか。
もっとわかりやすくたとえるなら、
高級クラブに行って、お酒をたくさんすすめられ、たいへん幸せな気持ちで店を出る場合と、
「お客さん飲みすぎだよ! タバコもそんなに吸ったら体に悪いし」と、
おばちゃんに笑顔で怒られながら場末の居酒屋をあとにするときと、
どっちが、「自分のことを考えてくれるのか」という違いです。
人の命を預かる医師の仕事は、決して感謝や報酬を求める仕事ではありません。
〈一隅(いちぐう)を照らす〉仕事、基本的には地味で、しかも大変なのですが、
最もやりがいがある仕事です。
決して接待業であったり、人を楽しませたりするものではなく、ときに厳しく、
ときにつらいことを患者さんにいわなければなりません。
本書の内容を頭に刻んで、皆さんの体と心の健康のための一助となれば幸いです。

その後、東京大学医学部付属病院助手、日本学術振興会海外特別研究員、米国ハーバード大学医学部専任講師、埼玉県立がんセンター医長、板橋中央総合病院部長を経て、現在に至る。
医師として現場に立ち続ける傍ら、多くのメディアで医療ジャーナリストとして「正しく、タメになる情報を、楽しく伝えること」をモットーに、診療科を問わない医療全般に関する評論活動を展開中。
