Orphan Ivy Cloveller knows pain and hardship. Left alone at a London workhouse at the age of three, she toils just to survive. But she dreams of something more. Soon, the invitation from her only friend to flee the bleakness and misery proves too tantalizing to refuse, and together they escape the workhouse to search for something more. Anything more.

But life on the outside is even tougher for two young girls without work to find food and a place to stay. Life on the streets is a brutal battle of its own, and the stability of the workhouse soon beckons them back. But Ivy refuses the call to give up and continues to fight for her survival on the streets of London alone. Yet the fight proves to be the most grueling of all, for she’s forced into demeaning work and depending on the charity of others merely to survive.

Time takes its toll, and she’s tired and hungry to her bones, and eventually Ivy risks her own safety in new work to gamble on a better life, but this gamble doesn’t pay off. Or does it? For Ivy meets a special friend, and in time, that friend might be the sole reason she can find the first happiness and security she’s ever felt. But not only that, Ivy might just have found something she’s never had in her life, but has always dreamt about, if only the fates allow…
