Mercedes Hartz could not believe the man she had despised most of her life just showed up on her 10-day guided excursion through the rainforest wearing business attire. Holden Yearwood was a jock in high school, while Mercedes was interested in biology and nature. He cheated off of her and made fun of her in front of his friends. Was he there to torment her even more? Just seeing him brought back all the unwanted feelings and memories she had buried. She despised him. It didn't matter how adorable his rich brown eyes were. A jerk was a jerk.

Holden is just as surprised to see Mercedes as she is to see him. Who runs off alone to live in the middle of the jungle? Despite that, there's something different about the grown-up version of her. Holden learns quickly that this is not the girl he had known, even though she's still as sassy as ever. After losing a bet, and ending up in the middle of nowhere with Mercedes, Holden's life turns upside down as encounters with wild animals and indigenous people change his perspective.

Calling a truce, the two set out to explore the jungle, only to end up captured by an isolated tribe who sees them as their enemies. How will Holden and Mercedes explain they aren't there to harm the people when they can't even speak their language? Will they be able to escape or will life as they'd known it become forever changed?
