Re-listenable, Approachable Intro to Benedictine Thought

I have now listened to this three times. After living at a Benedictine abbey for some 5 years and moved on to other things, this has helped bridge the two parts of me: the joys and struggles of the life I live in the world now and the wisdom of monastic life. Those two do not often connect. In fact, it may very well be the work of Benedictine oblates (or those who like me are just “monastic in character”) to live differently—this book helps any of us attempting to manage that balance with patience without losing our souls.

I especially like explanations of the rule as compared to the Rule of the Master, thoughts on hospitality, and the afterword. The Rule of Benedict is a down-to-earth, not convoluted or multi-step process that only begins with adherence to the rule. Improvement comes from following the rule and little else. Any drawn to a realistic but contemplative lifestyle can benefit from this.

Last, this “manual” is unassuming and unpretentious. Br. Benet points out that the rule precedes the reformation and maintains a pan-Christian openness, knowing that Oblation is not reserved to Catholics alone. I would only add that the Rule is also a piece of human culture, not even just owned by Christians. Those who are able to hear mention of Christianity and of God but are not themselves devout should still find a series of values and methods useful for a beneficial lifestyle.
