Acerca de esta escucha
Welcome to John Leguizamo’s hilarious and educational take on 3,000 years of Latin history in 80 minutes.
When his son gets a school assignment on heroes, John seizes the chance to teach him all about the great figures of Latin American history. But once he sets out on his irreverent crash course across three continents and three millennia of history—from conquistadores to cumbia, Montezuma to Menudo, and taking on the characters in all of it—he uncovers provocative truths that shock even him.
Entertainment Weekly called Latin History for Morons “boisterous and joyful” during its Broadway run at Studio 54, directed by Tony Taccone. A play that The New York Times says “poses sharp and timely questions of what culturally defines American identity,” Leguizamo’s newest solo adventure is educational and uproarious and is adapted exclusively for Audible.
Please Note: Latin History for Morons contains adult language.

For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Since its U.S. debut a quarter-century ago, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx. Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation.

Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

America Ferrera has always felt wholly American, and yet, her identity is inextricably linked to her parents’ homeland and Honduran culture. Speaking Spanish at home, having Saturday morning salsa-dance parties in the kitchen, and eating tamales alongside apple pie at Christmas never seemed at odds with her American identity. Still, she yearned to see that identity reflected in the larger American narrative. Now, in American Like Me, America invites 31 of her friends, peers, and heroes to share their stories about life between cultures.

In Fantasy Island, Ed Morales traces how, over the years, Puerto Rico has served as a colonial satellite, a Cold War Caribbean showcase, a dumping ground for US manufactured goods, and a corporate tax shelter. He also shows how it has become a blank canvas for mercenary experiments in disaster capitalism on the frontlines of climate change, hamstrung by internal political corruption and the US federal government's prioritization of outside financial interests.

In this dual polemic and manifesto, Julissa dives into and tears apart the lie that assimilation leads to belonging. She combs through history and her own story to break down this myth, arguing that assimilation is a moving finish line designed to keep Black and brown Americans and immigrants chasing racist American ideals. She talks about the Lie of Success, the Lie of Legality, the Lie of Whiteness, and the Lie of English - each promising that if you obtain these things, you will reach acceptance and won’t be an outsider anymore.

Go Behind the Scenes with John Leguizamo
School is in session!
Education is at the heart of John Leguizamo’s latest solo show Latin History for Morons, which has him hitting the history books in order to awaken his son’s pride in their Latino heritage. In 80 hilarious minutes, Leguizamo covers 3,000 years of history, starting with the Aztec and Incan empires all the way to Columbus’s discovery of the New World, and beyond. I was moved with how Leguizamo uses his parental urgency to teach his son and us listeners the oft overlooked history and contributions of Latin America to the United States. Funny, heartwarming, and blunt, Leguizamo makes his case by referencing facts culled from some major history books that prove that Latinos have shed blood in every war fought on American soil. Leguizamo himself deserves a medal of honor for taking on this topical subject.
Latino heroes aren’t often referenced in mainstream media, but that doesn’t mean they don’t abound in history books. From Aztec leaders to contemporary pop singers, these are the Latinos who have made a mark in Latin America and the United States.
Following the success of his solo show on Broadway, Latin History for Morons, stand-up comedian John Leguizamo brings this combination of laughs and sharp insights to Audible. Inspired by a desire to instill pride in his son for the family’s Latino heritage, Leguizamo really does his research. He soon gains a deeper understanding of the contributions Latinos have made to the world. His son may not have Civil War generals as ancestors like the bully who tried to make him feel inferior, but his heritage has all the spice and culture necessary to make a couple of continents feel proud.
In Latin History for Morons, a frenetic and boisterous Leguizamo takes the listener on an educational journey against stereotypes and through his narration calls attention to racial issues that he became aware of only after he took on this research. The listening experience is made all the more enjoyable by Leguizamo’s sound effects—you’ll even hear him imitate arrows swishing by—and his animated interpretation of all the characters he mentions, and thus brings to life.
John Leguizamo received an Emmy Award in 1999 and Latin History for Morons won a Special Tony Award in 2018.

He garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as a sensitive drag queen in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, was the recipient of the 2002 ALMA Special Achievement Award for Entertainer of the Year, and picked up ALMA Award nominations for his roles in Moulin Rouge (Best Supporting Actor) and King of the Jungle (Best Lead Actor). But as she begins preparing for the months-long quest, she realizes the answers she's seeking might not be on top of a snow-covered mountain. Especially since she just learned there was snow in California.

Historia
Separated by 10 years, 3,000 miles, and the unrelenting stresses of adulthood, best friends Janet and Serena plan a 40th birthday girls’ trip to reconnect. Armed with only the clothes on their backs and zero survival skills, they fight to overcome hunger, thirst, deadly wildlife—and most terrifyingly—decades of accrued resentment. Historia
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Historia
A bad best man’s speech can ruin a wedding. Why do we plan every detail of a perfect day and then give the groom’s idiot best friend five minutes of total power? Enter Nate (Glen Powell), a speechwriter-for-hire who helps people write incredible best man speeches. To keep the best man from embarrassing himself (and the newlyweds), Nate uses his list of don’ts: Don’t mention the exes, don’t be rated R, and don’t bum everyone out. Nate’s system never fails. That is, until he meets Dan (Nicholas Braun).

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Historia
Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).

Great storytelling and presentation. Fascinating history succinctly presented and sandwiched into an entertaining anecdote. 10/10 will recommend.

Fun and interesting listen
I love John Leguizamo and am used to his antics in acting all manners of crazy but this was just okay for me. I understand the importance of where he is going and if this story is actually true, it makes it even better but I felt like some of the narration was over the top or a bit disconnected. I love the ending and overall enjoyed this short story though

70 years I've been on this planet and I never knew the majority of what was brought out here, probably because I'm a white guy that grew up in the southwest... Yeah, I'm the moron that needed this in the worst way! Thank you... I needed that!

Very entertaining, not very informative
I really enjoyed this. John Leguizamo is an excellent actor and he’s so fun to listen to.
But as for the actual content, it wasn’t very informative or “historical”, but rather more personal. Not that that’s bad, just not what I thought it would be. I actually would like to listen to a Latin history audiobook, I think that would be very interesting.

Phqu
This is a great story & would be worth five overall stars if he'd quit going for the cheap laughs by over using the "Phqu" word.., he's smarter than that & does himself a disservice by patronizing us white folks by playing a fool...
