En 16 juillet 1945, "Gadget", l'une des 2 bombes au plutonium, est testée dans le désert du Nouveau Mexique. Oppenheimer désabusé déclare : "Je suis devenu la mort, le destructeur des mondes". 6 août 1945 : "Little Boy" (bombe à l'uranium) explose sur Hiroshima. La bombe explosa à une altitude de 530 m avec une puissance estimée à 13 kt de TNT. Une zone d'environ 12 km2 fut dévastée et les Japonais estimèrent que 69 % des bâtiments de la ville avaient été détruits. De 70 000 à 80 000 personnes, soit environ 30 % de la population de Hiroshima, furent tués immédiatement et 70 000 autres furent blessés. 9 août 1945 : "Fat man" (bombe au plutonium) est lâchée sur Nagasaki. L'explosion dégagea une puissance de 21 kt de TNT. Environ 44 % de la ville fut détruite et il y eut 35 000 morts et 60 000 blessés.
