Acerca de esta escucha

Discover three never-before-collected short stories—of deadly deals, unforgettable investigations, and a mysterious ex-con—from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.

In "Cahoots," a backroom poker game turns deadly when a cheater is exposed. In "Mulholland Dive," a man who deciphers the hidden codes of accident scenes investigates a fatality off L.A.'s most fabled roadway. In "Two-Bagger," an obsessed cop tails an ex-con he believes is about to carry out a contract killing.

Together these gripping, unforgettable stories show that Michael Connelly "knows the workings of the LAPD and the streets of the City of Angels like he knows his own name" (Boston Globe).

One of Connelly's weaker efforts

Any additional comments?

Three short stories: cheating at an 1920s backroom poker game, a traffic crime investigator analyzes the scene of a suspicious celebrity death, and a cop tails a would-be assassin to a Dodgers game. The stories were all decent because Connelly’s a good writer but they’re lightweight and easily missed, even for fans. His short story books “Angle of Investigation” and “Suicide Run” were much better. Bechdel test: fail.

Great Short Stories

Would you consider the audio edition of Mulholland Dive to be better than the print version?

I am not sure, I have not seen the written version of this book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I like the two main characters in the first story they were sneaky and cool, but then when I heard the third story I liked the Clueston the detective that was working the case, he played that scene perfectly, I didn't even catch on to it until he started smiling leaving the scene of the crime, but what goes around comes around. In the end he got what he deserved from being a dirty cop.

What about David W. Collins’s performance did you like?

I liked that with each story even though it was the same person reading it was different emotion and feelings in it. His performance was great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

All the stories were short but great.Michael Connelly is an amazing writer. It is a bit weird to hear these 3 crime stories and Harry Bosch not be in them, but I still like them.

Any additional comments?

None.

Good, but not the best

Would you try another book from Michael Connelly and/or David W. Collins?

I enjoyed these short stories. But, frankly Michael Connelly and his characters (Bosch or Haller) are at their best in complete books.

What does David W. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Good narration, but not too much to work with.

Was Mulholland Dive worth the listening time?

Yes.

Great listen

What made the experience of listening to Mulholland Dive the most enjoyable?

Dependable story line full development of characters surprise ending.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love Harry Bosch. Wish I could meet him in person.

What does David W. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It is easier to form mental pictures when you listen instead of read.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

There are a million stories in Los Angeles and this is one of them.

Three Michael Connelly Short Stories Without Harry Bosch

There are several collections of Michael Connelly short stories available on Audible, and I have listened to three others, but this is the first that does not involve Harry Bosch. “Cahoots” is an unsatisfying story about a poker game gone wrong; “Mulholland Dive” is an interesting procedural about accident reconstruction, with a big twist; and “Two Bagger” is an OK story about an LA County Sheriff’s deputy and his brand new partner tracking an assassin, again with a twist ending. Overall, this is the weakest of the Connelly short story collections I’ve listened to. Generally, I like the collections, which serve as good, and inexpensive fillers when I’m between listens. David Collins is a capable narrator, yet no Len Cariou.

A touch of O. Henry, a lot of pure Connelly

Save for the first of these three short stories (a youthful seeming yarn), these are good, mature Connelly tales without contrivances. However, they're pricy for the book's brevity.
