Resumen del Editor

Celebrated actor, personality, and all-around nerd, Wil Wheaton updates his memoir of collected blog posts with all new material and annotations as he reexamines one of the most interesting lives in Hollywood and fandom--and now for the first time in audio, narrated by Wil himself, with an introduction written and read by Neil Gaiman!

From starring in Stand by Me to playing Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation to playing himself, in his second (third?) iconic role of Evil Wil Wheaton in The Big Bang Theory, to becoming a social media supernova, Wil Wheaton has charted a career course unlike anyone else, and has emerged as one of the most popular and well respected names in science fiction, fantasy and pop culture.

Back in 2001, Wil began blogging on wilwheaton.net. Believing himself to have fallen victim to the curse of the child actor, Wil felt relegated to the convention circuit, and didn’t expect many would want to read about his random experiences and personal philosophies.

Yet, much to his surprise, people were reading. He still blogs, and now has an enormous following on social media with well over 3 million followers.

In Still Just a Geek, Wil revisits his 2004 collection of blog posts, Just a Geek, filled with insightful and often laugh-out-loud annotated comments, additional later writings, and all new material written for this publication. The result is an incredibly raw and honest memoir, in which Wil opens up about his life, about falling in love, about coming to grips with his past work, choices, and family, and finding fulfillment in the new phases of his career. From his times on the Enterprise to his struggles with depression to his starting a family and finding his passion--writing--Wil Wheaton is someone whose life is both a cautionary tale and a story of finding one’s true purpose that should resonate with fans and aspiring artists alike.

Grateful

I am grateful for the candid reflections Will made to his previous work. I am grateful for the normalization of mental health discussions he makes. I am grateful for the honesty and current love for self that is evident in his work. Thank you Will for sharing a bit of your journey with us and reflecting on your personal changes over time. I wish more of us were this honest with the importance of personal change over time.

Like catching up with an old friend

Wow.

After 24 hours of listening to Wil, I feel like I’ve known him my entire life… which I guess I sorta have! But I’m not a die hard Star Trek fan and I never followed his blog. I did watch TNG quite a bit as a kid though… and Stand By Me was one of my favorite movies growing up… but it was binge-watching The Big Bang Theory with my son last year that reminded me of just how talented an actor Wil is! So, when I saw this book on Audible, I got it totally on a whim. I had ZERO idea what to expect… and “Still Just a Geek” did NOT disappoint!

Wil confronts his past head on. He has justifiably harsh words for the people who abused and manipulated him throughout much of his life… but in some ways, he has even harsher words for his younger self. He targets his past ignorance and makes no excuses for his hurtful words. As someone who has grown quite a bit myself over the past 20 years, I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to re-examine my own words from 2 decades ago. And clearly, this was not an easy experience for Wil. But he handled it with class… owning his mistakes and sincerely apologizing when necessary. Such humility is inspiring and the world could use a lot more of it. But equally inspiring is the grace and love he shows “Younger Wil”, while working his way through the shame and self loathing that he experienced when he was younger.

I am so thankful I got this book. I enjoyed spending time with Wil… an hour here and there… over the past few weeks. And for the first time in decades, I’m in the mood to watch TNG again! And I think I’ll share “Stand By Me” with my son.

Thanks, Wil.

Eavesdropping on therapy

Wil Wheaton has matured since
he wrote the original book in 2001.
His perspectives on humor, sexism,
homophobia, ableism, misogyny,
inclusivity, etc. are vastly different.
How do we know this?
He tells us.
REPEATEDLY throughout the entire book.
We get it. You’ve grown up.
Most people DO change over 20 years.
We all said things 20 years ago that
we regret or at least cringe about now.
Apologize ONCE and move on, Wil.
It gets exhausting over 24 hours of narration. Wil is a great storyteller and has a neat perspective on stardom.
I was excited to hear some updates including his time on Big Bang Theory, creating TableTop, and reentering the Star Trek family through the Ready Room and Picard. All of that was enjoyable, but the constant cringe cost him stars across the board.

Be Nice to each other

If you like or love Wil Wheaton this book is for you. If you don’t know who he is go google him and then come back here and listen to this book. If you don’t like Wil Wheaton that is certainly a choice you are allowed to make but then why are you here reading my review?

This book and the performance of this book will make you laugh and it will make you cry, unless you are a heartless personal then might I suggest some therapy. (Mental Health is important and if you suffer from it you are not alone)

Anyways read or I guess listen to this book it’s a good use of 24 hours of your time. :-)

Thank you. Virtual hugs to you.

This book is beautiful, painful, and therapeutic. Beautifully painful therapy. I think that is the perfect description of the experience of hearing Wil Wheaton examine and come to terms with his life, writing, and life-long battle with mental illness.

He describes his family's criminal abuse and neglect and how that contributed to a brilliant young actor who was in constant pain and anger but never knew why. I was touched deeply by this experience.

I highly recommend this audiobook version. Not only do you get to hear the author read it himself which always adds a wonderful amount of insight and connection (especially when the author is also an extremely talented voice actor) but also because Mr. Wheaton adds so much content to this audio addition that it is almost a completely new book.

Thank you for sharing your story and your positive message with your fans, Mr. Wheaton. What you have done for mental health awareness is worthy and wonderful.

I'll try not to fan girl Too hard.

Like Wil does, I want to give you some context. 1. I'm not a writer. 2. Wil was my very first crush I can't remember a boy on or off screen that I crushed harder on than Wil, till Johnny, and Leo came along... But Wil still had my heart first (sorry to my husband, again). 3. This review was written for Wil Wheaton.

Dear Wil,
At first I was really upset I missed the first book (I had a bad toll experience in Tabletop comments once and I didn't keep up) but after listening to this one I'm sorry Wil but I'm really glad I missed it. With that said I'd like to tell you why; what I loved most was hearing you talking to your younger self. I loved hearing correct and give advice. My husband loved your book too. What started out as me listening to my childhood crush talking in my kitchen and occasionally yelling "That's right, You tell them Wil!" while my husband played Minecraft in the living room probably rolling his eyes, turned into me watching Star trek in any form for the first time (yes it's TNG, and I'm 37) and knowing somehow when I was 5 that I had a crush on Gordie La Chance (you) because even though I hadn't gone through my trauma yet I related to him (you) the most, I still do. For my husband I would say it turned into a chance to understand the broken woman he married at 19 (I was 20) and how her brain worked, but also a chance to learn his wife is a geek. I will recommend this book to anyone and everyone for the life advice, the trip down memory lane and the open honesty of mental health. I got a chance to look at my brain and honestly appreciate my growth, I cried for and with you, I laughed with you, and I felt like listening to you talk about everything openly and honestly, I didn't feel alone (that's a running pattern still). I'm so proud of you and everything you've done, well I should say you make a great bad guy (Chaos in Leverage) but I love when you play the good guy better. We await you new adventures with catching up on everything we've missed... One last thing I'd like to tell you, the main reason I'm writing this is if I never meet you in person you might read this review, you have meant so much to me in my life, thank you for being my friend when I didn't have one but had an imagination to make you real. If I do ever meet you I might be so shy to speak to you I might just stand there and cry... So sorry for that in advance... And Fuck William Shattener!!! (however his name is spelled) my grandmother, mother and I agree with you.
Love, A Fan Girl

Honest, self-aware and often heartbreaking

I missed 'Just a Geek' when it originally came out so I was glad to hear that this annotated version was in the works. Wheaton does an excellent job narrating his own story. It's often funny, sad and sometimes downright heartbreaking. If you're a geek I do recommend it.
