The Byzantine Empire survived as a self-contained political entity longer than any other in the history of Christianity. From the time Constantine the Great moved the capital of the Roman Empire to the Greek city of Byzantium in AD 330 - which he renamed Constantinople - to its downfall to the Turks in 1453, the great trading emporium and center of Orthodox Christianity remained the most dazzling metropolis in the world. Its palaces, its Hippodrome, its art treasures, and its churches were the wonder of mankind. For more than 1,000 years, Christian civilization was at its zenith in this magical, mysterious, and magnificent city.
This history by Charles Oman is a catalog of good, bad, and indifferent emperors who either pushed Byzantine Civilization to new heights or savagely drove it to defeat and dissolution. It is a strange tale populated by some of the most interesting men and women who have ever lived.

The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by a besieging army of around 80,000 men led by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ended the Byzantine Empire. The city's defense was in the hands of Emperor Constantine XI, who had 7,000 to 10,000 soldiers at his disposal and, likely, fell during the last storm on the city. The fall of the Byzantine Empire also marked the final rise of the Ottoman Empire to become a major power. The conquest has a high symbolic value in both Turkish and Western European reception.

adequate good book. great reader
I've heard this guy before. He had read some others book I have and I liked him enough to actually look up who he was and pay attention to the name. he is one of the better performers for sure. no complaints AT ALL. ON PERFORMANCE.. 100%.
there is not really anything to criticize about the book. i mean I've read better but it ticks all the boxes so you at least couldn't be upset. Out of the 2 I've read on the same subject .. this one is 2#. but not a reason I can pin point. it gives you the facts and overview that doesn't miss anything , isn't too long, and he still names every emperor..but isn't really comprehensive either. I recommend reading it you're interested in the subject. first time. maybe not if you are familiar. might be a repeat. but book was done well.

That narrator…
While the story is good and the content comprehensive, I just could not get over the narrator’s voice! This English accent was way too strong and irritating. I couldn’t continue to listen and finish the book.
I really tried to look over this, but eventually it just got to me…
