"A perfect mix of MAGIC, VAMPIRES, STAR-CROSSED LOVE, and writing as SHARP AND DEADLY a spear."—Nisha J. Tuli, author of Trial of the Sun Queen
THE THRILLING ROMANTASY FROM NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR LAUREN BLACKWOOD!
One vampire to kill. Another to love.
War doesn’t scare Jerusalem. She’s a Saint. Thanks to powerful demigod-style reflexes, endurance, and strength, she’s fearless. And she has one goal—revenge.
But she never expects to team up with the handsome, arrogant Alexei to accomplish it. He’s one of those Ancient Vampires. And ever since her family was enslaved and murdered by one, Jerusalem hates vampires.
But in the year they've been fighting alongside one another against the Confederate Army and the vampires who benefitted off slavery, Alexei’s never done anything but prove he’s on the Union’s side and hers. She may know the enemy better, hate the enemy more than anyone in her battalion, but so does he. And she’ll use that to her advantage. Because if she can get her revenge by helping Black people gain freedom and equality without having to steal it for themselves like she had to, then all the better.
Together, she and Alexei set out to change the course of the war, risking their hearts and themselves as they attempt to take down the vampire who destroyed everyone Jerusalem held dear. But for Jerusalem, it’s about more than love and justice.
It's about killing a god.
“A CHEEKY, ROMANTIC, and THRILLING revenge story."—Kirkus

Welcome to Tiankawi - shining pearl of human civilization and a safe haven for those fleeing civil unrest. Or at least, that's how it first appears. But in the semi-flooded city, humans are, quite literally, on top: peering down from shining towers and aerial walkways on the fathomfolk - sirens, seawitches, kelpies and kappas - who live in the polluted waters below. For half-siren Mira, promotion to captain of the border guard means an opportunity to help her downtrodden people. When extremists sabotage the annual boat race, violence erupts, as does the clampdown on fathomfolk rights.

After being placed in foster care, Rhi is hungry for a fresh start and begins working at the Happy Valley Wildlife Preserve. While in the woods, she stumbles upon a surreal sight: a pack of wolves guarding four feral and majestic girls. After Rhi gains their trust, they reveal that they’re princesses from another land, raised by a magical prophet they call Mother—and they're convinced Rhi is their lost fifth sister. Unsure what to believe, Rhi ushers the girls to civilization, where they’re met with societal uproar and scrutiny, dubbed “The Wild Girls of Happy Valley.”

What a ride?!
Wow! I didn't know what to expect with this one. It was a pleasant surprise. The surprise was it was a YA novel with zero spice but I enjoyed it anyway. It was action packed. The plot was perfectly paced. The characters were developed. This was my first read by this author but it won't be my last.

Roller Coaster Ride
The characters in this book will live in my consciousness as an example of enduring love, hope, and critical truths about the transatlantic slavery in 🇺🇸. Get your spear, you will need it for this adventure.

Entertaining but Not Necessarily Historically Accurate
I was able to approve this book for our school library. I loved the overall storyline. The characters were alive and popping out of the speakers. However, I found the historical inaccuracies very distracting. I enjoyed the diversity this story represented.
