Acerca de esta escucha

The Eagle and the Dragon takes the listener on an epic journey of thousands of miles by sea and land across three continents.

When Senator Aulus Aemilius Galba is tapped to lead the first Roman mission to China, he anticipates an easy path to fame and fortune. Gaius Lucullus sees a bright military future, but his reluctant centurion Antonius Aristides would rather be somewhere else. Translators Marcia Lucia and her brother Marcus were taken from their village in China to serve the Han court, abused and despised, hiding a horrible secret. A notorious Arab pirate, with a Roman price on his head and crucifixion in his future, shadows the entourage, seeking the wealthy prize of their treasure-laden ships. But Fate has other plans for these unlikely companions, sending them together on a journey that will take them thousands of miles by sea and land across the tapestry of the mysterious worlds at the close of the first century.

From the storm-tossed Indian Ocean to the opulent Hanaean court, from the wild grassy steppes north of China to the forbidding peaks of the Pamir Mountains of Bactria, they fight for their lives, hoping to find the road that will lead them back to Rome.

An Outstanding Saga of Roman Valor

While this audiobook represents a mere historical novel, it is correctly entrenched in a scholarly, factual narrative vis-a-vis Classical Roman ideals and ancient Hainanese (Chinese) traditions circa 100 CE/AD.

Perfect Listen for a Road Trip

Recently I took a series of road trips with my husband and this audiobook was the perfect companion for us. Over 25 hours. Harry Frost’s narration is engaging, great pacing, and his characters are easily differentiated.
If you like historical fiction and epic adventure this novel set during the Roman Empire and on to the first mission to China should not be missed. Easy to recommend!

Epic tale!! Five-star read in every way

This book is an incredible mix of factual research and exciting fiction. There are royals, military, pirates, kidnap victims, sword-fighting, sailing around the known world, mongols, concubines and courtesans - this book is FABULOUS. I'm so sad it has ended!! I was truly loving this incredible adventure. It takes place a few years after Mt. Vesuvius erupted, so a few generations after the birth of Christ, a time in which very few other epic novels have been written.
This book is super exciting, but it's also an incredible history lesson that really makes the power and stretch of the Roman empire at that time come to life. The sprinkling references to events that we're all familiar with from history woven into the story make this book even better. I can feel the same excitement the characters feel as they explore new lands and experience new cultures. As exciting and new as travel is for me, even though I have TV and movies and books to tell me what a place is like before I go, I was really feeling their fascinating with the Han Empire and the many other people and dynasties they traveled through.
I cannot give this book enough praise. This is a five-star read. It's written for adults but is exciting enough that it would be a perfect pick for a family with teenagers on a road trip.
Let me say something about this narrator - Harry Frost is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of being entertained by (I listen to about 40 audiobooks a year). This book is even better as an audiobook because of Harry's amazing talent with multuple accents, his ability to maintain a character throughout the book, and the way he brings Lewis McIntyre's incredible writing to life.
Mr. McIntyre, you did your book a wonderful service by picking such a talented voice actor to bring it to life.
I'm so grateful and honored that I was chosen as a reviewer of what will surely be a classic that endures and is passed on for many generations.
p.s. It really comes through that Mr. Frost enjoyed reading this book for us, which makes it that much more exciting to listen to as he gives his all to every chapter and character.
