Excellent is an understatement!

I loved that it spanned generations. The characters were very endearing , and the story wove many tales. The narrator was outstanding. I found myself thinking with an Irish accent, that's how good she was. The Irish expressions were so very interesting and fun! I would catch myself thinking about the story all the time and was always glad whrn I could finally sit down and listen. This is an amazing book. Enjoy!!!

Fabulous fabulous

I loved this storyline and he author’s way of ‘weaving the fabrics together’ to create yet again another fabulous tale!

GREAT until...

Matt starts talking. Great because this is a realistic, multi-generational story with interesting characters -- until we get to Matt. The more he said, the more he grated on my nerves. I'd mostly fault the narrator. Her attempt at his accent was jarring to my ears. I'd also fault the writer. Having him call Grania "Babe" tarnished his otherwise intelligent character. I'd also fault the book's editor. Someone should have caught this flaw in Matt and recognized Grania was not the kind of woman who would have tolerated that nickname.

Wonderful story

I loved this story and the way it was told. This is one of my favorite authors truly. I enjoy every book so far by her but I am sad that I will be running out of her story's very soon. I hope she continues to write and bring such a wonderful experience of the lovely way we get to bee taken away with her as if we are living in the story. Thank you for all your hard work. I also enjoyed the narrator very much and would like to thank her for all her hard work as well because as you know if the narration is not done well then no matter how wonderful the book it can be totally ruined in a second.

Wonderful book, wonderful author.

I have to say that after having read "the midnight rose", I was concerned by the similarity of the story telling, jumping from one period in time to another , but quickly was charmed by mrs Riley's impeccable style and great sensitivity.

Great narration

I loved the description of Ireland and the story’s particular place
I love the story of two generations. Hate the arrogance of “upper class”
In London Ireland and America. Good story line bu so sad

Another excellent story by an excellent storyteller

As usual, Riley did not disappoint. It always takes some getting used to the changing timeframes but eventually I do and settle in for a rich tale with interesting characters. I liked the narration for the most part though the American characters were a bit stereotypical and their language a bit jarring and unnatural. However the story and the Irish characters were wonderful.

Great Story, No...

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would if they were to read it and not listen. Though Gerri Halligan is a wonderful reader, and has UK and German accents down, her American accents are just terrible. Whenever she was required to switch to them, it nearly ruined the text. That was unfortunate. I wish they would have troubled themselves with an additional reader for the American speaker passages. It would have made the story much more dramatic and professional.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes, until Halligan switched as I stated above.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No - it didn't grab me that way, but it was a very engaging book. However, there were flaws that contradicted - what I believe - the reader is meant to understand about some of the characters, and mysteries (meant to build conflict) that came across as poor character depth than a suspenseful plot. For instance, Kathleen's character seems unwise/stupid when Riley writes her as not coming forward to tell the truth about Gerald's dubious behavior and blood stained pants even though her brother is being sentenced to life in prison. Even at sixteen, this seems like a rather large departure from the wise, sane, and practical child she's portrayed as. The reader is meant to believe that the land, and the family home, is more precious to our sound-minded Kathleen than her brother? It didn't compute and is never even addressed later in the telling of the story as a horrible choice that - an older wiser - Kathleen regrets. Kathleen, who we read as this all-knowing and loving character - still blames Joe's imprisonment on Anna and Gerald; we read nothing of her omission of facts as likely the main reason Joe dies in jail. So, that was fairly confusing.

Any additional comments?

I like Lucinda Riley's stories thus far. She's a very talented story teller and I look forward to reading more.
