Her concern seems justified as Lucas, once ensconced, becomes completely ensnared in the turbulent past that seems to haunt the house - a past that is captured in old movie reels featuring Lucas's now-dead family: his charismatic uncle Patrick; his lovely mother, Claire; and his golden-boy father, Justin.

Over one decadent, dramatic year, as the friends frequently gather at the shadowed residence, secrets slide out and sexual tensions escalate, shattering friendships and forever changing lives. And all the while, the house cradles a devastating secret.

By turns taut and sensual, mesmerizing and disturbing, The House at Midnight is a gripping psychological novel that pulls the reader into the thrall of its ominous atmosphere.

Disappointed

This book was described as a psychological thriller. The title "The House at Midnight" led me to believe it would be atmospheric and creepy but only vague references were ever made about the house feeling malevolent but with no details as to why. The book is not thrilling in any way! The story is basically about a romance that went wrong and Jo, the protagonist has a weak and ineffectual character. Don't waste a credit on this.

Not so much

I have tried for several months to listen to this book. It drones on and on... The story is incomplete and only at rare times does it make any sense. I made the commitment to listen to the book as a whole and restarted it. After six days - I finished it. I've never been so disappointed in a novel as I was this on. Kate Redding, as always, gives a great read, but that is the only best part of tis novel. Save some time and money...

My Disappointment Is Boundless

What an incredible waste of my time and money.. I don’t have enough strength to convey the abject horror that a publishing house actually paid good money to this so-called author... readers beware,.. it’s tedious, relentlessly boring,.. and even the narrator will get on your nerves after the first five minutes..she turns the end of every sentence “ up”.. as if she’s asking a question.. I asked for a refund on this stinker..

Loved everything about this book! Great characters, picturesque setting, intriguing storyline..satisfying ending..Kate Reading is a true professional reader with perfect timing. A must!!
