Acerca de esta escucha

Sherlock Holmes has died. It looks like natural causes, but Watson suspects murder. Can he prove it? The evidence isn't there, but he can't give up. This stunning novella reveals Watson's own remarkable abilities to investigate an impossible case. The dilemma is real, the solution is surprising, and the conclusion is a fitting coda to the Holmes canon.

Written by David Gerrold, the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author behind The Trouble with Tribbles, The Man Who Folded Himself, and The Martian Child. Read by two-time Emmy Award-winning narrator Daniel Penz.

Really good!

I really enjoyed this Sherlock Holmes tale. As a rule, I avoid tales of his demise, but I did really enjoy this one. It would make a great starting point for the author to pen more Sherlock pastiches. I think he would do an admirable job, David Gerrold is a very good story teller, bringing the characters to life naturally, and the narration was great!

Watson Questions His Sanity After Holmes Death

There is no way to say this somber account of Sherlock Holmes final mystery is a joy to hear. But it is a story well shared in the Classic Conan Doyle style. Watson is charged by his long time friend, Sherlock Holmes, to find out who had just killed him. All signs point to a natural cause of death but Dr Watson has his own opinion.

The narrator is spot on with the characters interactions and he has different voices and reflections for each. The author superbly keeps the pace of the storing moving steadily to a dramatic climax. As the story builds towards it end the listeners anticipation and anxiety for what is coming next is very exciting. The interactions between Watson, Lestrade, and Mrs Hudson are very satisfying. You are in for a real treat!

Great new tale to add to the classic collection

The narration was so well done! I was hooked when I realized I hadn't realized Mrs. Hudson was being voiced by the same narrator as Watson! While the story is solid enough to enjoy, I am so glad I found it in audio version before I saw it in print.

Excellent story slightly marred by audio issues

First off, let me just say that this wasn’t quite what I expected — oh, certainly, there’s a mystery to be solved, and solved it is, in some detail. However, this isn’t about the mystery, it’s about the men and, ultimately, the truth that one delivers to the other. It’s about Dr. John Watson, and his journey through the twilight that comes with grief. The story is impeccably written, and read in a dignified manner (I’ll forgive Penz some of his accents) though rather slowly paced.

A story well worth visiting, and a damn good addition to the Holmes collection.

And now the caveat: I’m not sure what happened here, but the audio on this is a mess — it ducks a *lot*, at random intervals, and sounds like it had one compression pass too many. It’s not device specific, either. Very distracting.

Even if you are not a fan of Sherlock...

I have never been an avid listener of Sherlock Holmes like stories, but I do enjoy well written tales that draw me in no matter the genre. For this audiobook, I wanted to complete it no matter other pressing activities I needed to finish, yes it was that enjoyable. I can say that I was very thankful the audiobook is rather short, consisting of a little over 2 hours from start to finish, or I would have lost a day or more of productivity. I admit that I enjoyed everything that “The last case of Sherlock Holmes: as told by Doctor Watson” provided; it was very entertaining. The work was well written by David Gerrold; an author whose works I have reviewed in the past, and audiobook’s narration was skillfully performed by Daniel Penz; a narrator I have come to enjoy very much.

The story had a great hook, plenty of intrigue, and some wonderful procedural detective work along with professional narration which will keep the listener engaged along the way. I found myself trying to solve the crime, which is a good sign of a well-done detective story. For some reason, I see the audiobook more like a live play where characters come and go from the stage. Even for the brief piece of work the audiobook offers, it is worth a credit for the overall great way it was presented and told.

Regarding the audiobook’s narration, Daniel Penz does what he does best. The narration was solid, the character voicing was exceptional, and the audio quality was pristine. There were no audio issues such as breaths, pops, or other background noises. Each of the characters felt unique and alive. I know much of this comes from the text, but the narrator gives it depth. Even with female characters, Mr. Penz handles it as a great narrator would.

For parents and younger listeners, I do not recall this audiobook containing any adult subject matter or profanity. There are some supernatural elements, but these are not the core focus of the story. I feel this audiobook could be enjoyed by younger audiences of age 13 or older only because of its complexity and the ability to comprehend some of the events.

In summary, I recommend this audiobook even to those who may not enjoy this genre of story. I found it fascinating, well written and narrated, along with mystery all wrapped up neatly in a small package. Often one is not able to tell a story that has this much depth in the length this one did.

Quite Enjoyable. And Sad.

I really enjoyed listening to this Audible. To have Sherlock Holmes "really" die in the book was somewhat troubling, (yes, I realize he is a fictional character) and I really felt the pain of his close friends. And Mycroft, of course. The storyline was very brief but still held my interest long after I listened to the Audible.

I highly recommend this Audible. Did not read the ebook. I received a free code for this Audible. My review is voluntary and honest.

Long Live Holmes

Sherlock is gone … and Dr. Watson takes up the mantle to find out who done it. But was it murder? Or is it just that Dr. Watson can’t accept the death of his larger than life friend? As Watson digs in, those around him grow tired of humoring him. The mystery stumbles around a bit with a few red herrings until we get to real story at the end … and to be honest, it didn’t feel like a Holmes ending … too many unanswered questions. But the case was solved and the most excellent narration adds to the experience making this a solid listen.

I was given this free advance listener copy (ALC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

An enjoyable two hours

If you have read most of the Conan Doyle stories, you know that not every Sherlock Holmes story is an instant classic. So, if you are a fan of Sherlock and are not expecting a literary masterpiece, you will enjoy this short story. Classic characters such as Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, and the Baker Street Irregulars make appearances, and I enjoyed the author's treatment of Dr. Watson. Daniel Penz, the narrator, brings the story to life with some skillfully affected accents and the modest use of some audio effects. All in all, an enjoyable two hours.
