Resumen del Editor

Diane Mott Davidson, Queen of the Culinary Mystery, has once again constructed a clever recipe for murder and mystery. With The Last Suppers, she continues to whet her listeners' appetites both for good reading and good food.

Caterer Goldy Bear's wedding day becomes a nightmare when her groom, homicide detective Tom Schulz, calls her from a murder scene and then vanishes. Her only clue to his disappearance is a cryptic note dropped at the scene of the crime. Its biblical references lead her to search for a Judas among her friends in the church congregation.

Discovering intrigue in the most unlikely places, Goldy is so distraught that she's hearing voices in her head. Will she be a widow before she's a bride?

Barbara Rosenblat's lively narration is captivating. Whether listeners are listening to the unsavory details of the well-constructed murder plot, or learning the author's original recipes for delectable Monster Cinnamon Rolls and Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake, they won't want the book to end.

Enjoyably Unbelievable

I enjoy all of the Goldy Schultz books, but find it concerning that a person would take so much abuse from people! Supporting characters are so rude, selfish and ridiculous, that I’m torn between stress that she allows it and laughing from the absurdity that so many people can be so mean. And what woman could survive all the physical trauma and injuries she endured in each book? How can she cook and serve multiple course meals while solving crimes in such injured states. Still-great fun.

A little heavy on the doctrine, but a great listen

Would you listen to The Last Suppers again? Why?

I would. Having grown up in a very Lutheran environment, there was a lot I could identify with in regard to the narrative of Goldie's Episcopalian adventures. Others with less interest in church-related quarrels may not, though.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It did. There was sufficient action, mystery and food to keep me happy and waiting for the next chapter to start.

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

I think I liked her performance of the eventually discovered murderer the best- no spoilers, though!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I want to listen to every book all in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

Again, it's a great book from Ms. Mott Davidson, but if you're not a church-goer, you may be a little disinterested in some of the plot's motivators.

All suspense, no breaks

This book was hard to listen to because it felt like it was constant suspense, no breaks. The characters are selfish people gossiping about each other constantly to the point where I hated all of the characters because no one ever told the truth. Super annoying. I felt like I was tied up in knots trying to follow it because everything seemed SO IMPORTANT to the story. Turns out only a few clues even mattered anyway, and it felt like a let down at the end. I love this author but now I know why my library doesn't carry this one!

Didn't Grab Me

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I have read a few in this series and so far this one didn't grab my interest as much as the others. As a lapsed Anglican I found her setting intriguing--first time I ever read an American mystery that featured an Episcopalian church setting. Nevertheless, somehow the plot lacked something for me. Also, in general I found the narrator hard to get used to. The main character is apparently in her thirties, but the voice of the narrator seems more mature. Having said that, I have gotten used to her voice and I realize that its very maturity lends it to creativity as well.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I will just say that the lead up to the ending was what disappointed me, so the ending was a non starter.

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

I like them all. She has a very malleable, expressive voice.

Could you see The Last Suppers being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

As part of an over all series featuring these mysteries, yes. As to the casting, I have no idea who would be good in this series.

Any additional comments?

If you want a light read, I recommend this series of books. If you want something more substantial this is not the series for you.

Very fine mystery writing/superb narration

I just finished re-reading this (third time at least, one in paperback), but it has been seven years. I raised my score to five because it takes very effective writing and character development to find myself with tears running down my face near the ending. While I could complain the story was too stressful and gloomy or upsetting, it's a murder mystery, full of people who are obnoxious to evil. That is not abnormal for a mystery! (I just read some of the reviews and was astounded, not in a good way.) I was very impressed by the believable and loving behavior of close family and friends. As always, I loved the Colorado setting and the food. Goldy is a rich, complex character, and Diane Mott Davidson a fine writer. She just can't help herself, she has to run after hunches and suspicions and clues! Barbara Rosenblat's narration is perfect.

Great characters and recipes.

Touching, twisting, turning, and tantalizing as the mysteries unravel with small town gossip that simmers as much as the cooking through out the story! Barbra Rosenblat narration makes you feel wrapped in the world of Goldie Bear and participating not just listening.

Great to listen to in the car!

If you could sum up The Last Suppers in three words, what would they be?

Very good listen, really enjoyed the characters and story. Don't read expecting it to be realistic but fun.

could of been a better story, lacked morals

she's a hypocrite pretending to be religious and sleeping with her boyfriend. it would of been a good book if she had been more devoted to Christ and tried harder to keep his commandments
