Resumen del Editor

I have been to hangings before, but never my own.

Sitting in a jail cell on the eve of his hanging, April 1, 1875, freedman Persimmon "Persy" Wilson wants nothing more than to leave some record of the truth - his truth. He may be guilty but not of what he stands accused: the kidnapping and rape of his former master's wife. In 1860 Persy had been sold to Sweetmore, a Louisiana sugar plantation, alongside a striking light-skinned house slave named Chloe. Their deep and instant connection fueled a love affair and inspired plans to escape their owner, Master Wilson, who claimed Chloe as his concubine. But on the eve of the Union Army's attack on New Orleans, Wilson shot Persy, leaving him for dead, and fled with Chloe and his other slaves to Texas. So began Persy's journey across the frontier, determined to reunite with his lost love. Along the way he would be captured by the Comanche, his only chance of survival to prove himself fierce and unbreakable enough to become a warrior. His odyssey of warfare, heartbreak, unlikely friendships, and newfound family would change the very core of his identity and teach him the meaning and the price of freedom.

Nothing of your own

Love between slaves is challenged by the Slaveowner.
Insightful how lives of Indians and slaves crossed.
All the characters sounded the same

The Life and Times of Persimmon Wilson

Wow what a sad, sad tale. Very well written and read but not for anyone with a faint stomach. I can’t say I enjoyed it but I’m glad I listened to it.

Best

Since becoming an Audible. Member, this is the best reader I have listened to and a 10 star book. J.D. Jackson needs to do a whole lot of this.

Persimmon Wilson

A great story written in such a turbulent time. The civil war was all but over. Former slave captured and turned into Comanche Indian . Diverse characters with the narrative moving quickly but not too fast .

An American Tragedy For Sure!!!

Good story, and really well told. JD Jackson brought this audiobook to life, with his portrayal of Persimon Wilson. The story pulled at my heart strings, and wouldn’t let go. I learned a lot about the Native American way of life during those times and felt that the author interestingly tied the two main characters’ slave experience with the Native American experience. Ironically, I liked and hated Persey, but could always see his love for Chloe, and that he put her above all else. A surprisingly worthy listen!,0

Compelling storytelling

This was a long saga that took place in the turmoil of the pre and post civil war era. Interesting characters, compelling writing, and tragic endings for many. I loved the narration. JD Jackson was brilliant. I loved his voice.

There is a lot going on in this book; it could have been two separate books. It was such an intense story that I felt "full" after every 1-2 hour listening session. I almost gave up during Persy's time on the ranch with Moe and Sedge; just so much misery :(. I'm glad I stuck with it, because I loved his time with the Comanche. Persy - and his love for Chloe - was indomitable; Chloe survived as long as she could bear it. This is really an extraordinary book.

Ehhh!

This book was not one of my favorites. It was long and sometimes very boring. The story line was good but not great. The narration was okay.
