Interesting story, poor performance

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would like to have known more of Phoung, her thoughts, her views, her decision making process.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Vigot, as he is torn between friendship and duty is one of the more interesting characters.

How could the performance have been better?

My major critique is that many of the American accents by the reader sounded very similar to each other. As such, there in a passage where the Americans were speaking with each other, it was hard to follow who was who.

Love Triangle as Allegory

This is a famous book. It is supposed to be about the American despoilation of Vietnam in the pursuit of 'hearts and minds.' To my mind it is one of Greene's lazier efforts and a scrim for his anti-Americanism. The story is a love triangle between an ageing cynical British journalist, a naive American CIA agent and Phoung, a beguiling totally sexist/racistly draw Vietnamese woman who is the source of the key conflict in the story but who is really just a stand-in for the whole of Vietnam, with the tussle between the two men a field for Greene to let go with both barrels on American perfidy, ruthlessness and ignorance. When I first read this book in the 1960s it resonated. Now it seems dated, but there is no doubt that Greene can turn a phrase and the underlying issues are certainly worth exploring. Just with not such a ham hand.

Kudos — My Applause

This is my foray into Greene’s prodigious body of work. I am heartened with his brilliant writing and story telling craft. It took a long bit to acclimate to the reader’s style. Three quarters in I adjusted sufficiently to appreciate it. I will read my way through Greene’s work.

The narrator is dull but sort of fits the character. The sound quality is very poor because there is a ghost narration going on in the background - It's disappointing to listen to poorly recorded favorite story

The Quiet American

I didn't enjoy the book too much. I thought listening to the audio would help, but the story just doesn't appeal to me. If you're interest are in history of war and battles, then this might grasp your attention more. Overall grade, C+.

Very interesting story set in 1950's Vietnam.

A very engaging mystery set in Vietnam before America's full commitment to the War. Engrossing!

This was a great story!

I liked the character development and the plot in this book. Not only was the story good, but the insight into the French and early United States involvement in Viet Nam was interesting.

One part of this recording that was not good was the terrible accent given to the American. He was supposed to be from New England, but he sounded like someone from backwoods Texas with a mouthful of grits.

The fake accent… I can’t

I loved the movie so many years ago and am always looking for audiobooks so decided to give it a shot! The story: fantastic. The writing: wonderful. The fake American accent given to the titular American: very bad. The guy is quiet, but when you listen to this you’ll agree he’s not quiet enough. Why did they make this poor narrator do an accent?? Please, I beg, have this one re-recorded. I couldn’t get through the second chapter.

Narration was excellent. Perfectly timed and really expressed the curtness and precision that greene wished to convey

Every American should read

This is the best book I’ve read or listened to this year for sure. Still occupies my mind after months, when normally I’m lucky to remember anything after 2 weeks - lots of books. Fascinating read, great characters, but mainly expresses some truths, and dilemmas we Americans should have taken more seriously long ago.
