sound editing

The sound editing could have gone better I was constantly turning the volume up or down depending on whether the actor was yelling or whispering was extremely aggravating

Why is it so dark!?!

I first picked up this boxed set because I love all things sci-fi and fantasy. At first, I thought it was setting up to be an average but elegant story about a hero who overcomes adversity to prove what was thought a curse is actually a blessing. Then, as I kept listening, it turned into an almost macabre retelling of the horrors and suffering a small group of friends endured as they tried to figure out what truths were supplanted with lies. The detail the author went into toes the line between grotesque and horrific. It was, in my humble opinion, a fantastic story where you can really feel the suffering and moments of elation. The voiceover is fantastic, I believe he truly captured the essence of the characters in his performance. The best and worst moments of his performance have to be when he sang the songs that the characters were singing. I love this series and applaud the narrator, Bravo, to you both! I hope to find more of your books with both of you.

Stick with it!

It started off slow but, built to crescendo as the story unfolded. The story attacked differences between race, religion and politics very nicely and in the end, basically said that these people learned to just get along as soon as they decided to eliminate those factors as reasons for hatred. Pretty cool subject matter!

A great set to binge listen

I have read and listened to literally thousands of books. When I find a new author that I like I will binge read their books. This 4 book set was a binge in of itself. The story was new and by the end of the last book the main characters had become real and I will miss Ari and his wife. As Hawkeye Pierce would say this set of books was the "Finest Kind "

Too much drama

Although these stories have full character & excellent world-building, The drama is drawn out far beyond its purpose in moving the plot forward. I think that the worst mistake in this series is how often self doubt overwhelms all characters, and how weaknesses plague the female characters.

great story.. a definite page turner. was surely difficult to turn off, just had to hear what happens next.

Excellent

This was great. Love, adventure and chaos. Really a good listen. I enjoyed this while at work and I gotta say, this was a great way to use my quiet time.

Draws you in

This series draws you in and captivates you. I didn't want to stop listening and I didn't want it to end.

Okay or awesome

I have 86 hours left so will keep updating as I go. Love triangle for quite awhile which is bothersome for me who is hungry for action. Then it finally grows out of it and things start getting interesting. Also most importantly exciting magic finally!

Great series collection

Overall: An interesting series, with fun characters that I grew to love. My only real complaint about the narration is I wouldn't listen to it with earbuds in as there were some volume differences, and it could become uncomfortable if you adjust it with earbuds in.

Narration: I thought Johnson did a great job bringing the characters and stories to life. It was easy to distinguish between the individual characters, and with a listen this long that's extremely important. I would absolutely listen to more books narrated by Johnson in the future. As I mentioned above, my only complaint was some volume issues, but that might be a backend editing issue.

Story: 

Book 1 - Above the Storm: Great start to the series. Wonderful world building, a bit of steampunk plus magic. I loved Ary from the start, and enjoyed following his character arc. The characters were complex, and I enjoyed the depth they had to them. Everything was very descriptive, and for the most part moved along smoothly.

Book 2 - Reavers of the Tempest: Although this is part romance (a love triangle is an undercurrent of the story), there was also plenty of action and magic. Characters we're already familiar with return, and we get to watch them grow and change anymore. We do get to learn more about the belief system of this world, which adds some nice depth to the setting.

Book 3 - Storm of Tears: I've really become attached to Ary at this point. My heart really went out to him with some of the things that occured in this book. I'm really fascinated with how much depth the world has, and I have to applaud Reid for continuing to grow it in each subsequent volume. There were plenty of twists to keep you guessing throughout, and it's a great addition to the series.

Book 4 - Golden Darkness Descends: I know I've mostly talked about Ary, but I've come to realize I'm also kind of attached to Chaylene. They make such a perfect pair, and although the romance isn't a focal point, it certainly adds to the story. I spent the entire story cheering them on as they faced down such a big task. Definitely looking forward to book five!

Book 5 - Shattered Sunlight: A great way to end the series, with many revelations, and things get neatly wrapped up by the end. I finished this feeling a sense of closure, which is always nice when reaching the end of such an epic story arc spanning so many books. Absolutely start with book one, but don't be daunted by the length of book five when it comes to finish reading the series.
