Resumen del Editor

This Is Where We Talk Things Out by Caitlin Marceau, author of Palimpsest: A Collection of Contemporary Horror, follows the gut-wrenching journey of Miller and her estranged mother Sylvie, who have always had a tense relationship.

After Miller's father dies, she agrees to a girls' vacation away from the city to reconnect with the only family she has left. Although she’s eager to make things work, Miller can’t help but worry that her mother is seeing their countryside retreat as a fun weekend getaway instead of what it really is: a last-ditch effort to repair their relationship.

Unfortunately, that quickly becomes the least of Miller’s problems.

Sylvie's trapped in the past, and if Miller's not careful, she will be too. A cross between Stephen King's Misery and Stephanie Wrobel's Darling Rose Gold, This Is Where We Talk Things Out explores the horror of familial trauma, mother-daughter relationships, and what happens when we don't let go.

Beautifully nightmarish read

Wow, what a book! I don't normally make this kind of comparison but honestly? Misery meets Psycho but also totally original. This is a rough read if you've lived through an overbearing, emotionally abusive relationship with a parent. But it deals with the dynamic with a vivid emotional honesty juxtaposed against a disturbingly heightened set of circumstances. Harrowing, difficult, tense and quick. Highly recommended.

Don’t go home in a blizzard.

My heart is still racing and my breathing hasn’t resumed normally. I didn’t know childhood (and adult) parental trauma was a trigger for me but here I am giving side eye to my sweet mom. Caitlin Marceau brought this story way too close to life. At first I thought Miller was overreacting. I was so wrong. Annoyance, anger, rage, fear, terror, despair— just a few of the things I felt viscerally. Great book and the narration was excellent.

Holy Smokes

This is such a good book. Kept me listening and engaged the entire time. My mouth was open thinking “no way” the entire story. Loved it.

best narration I've heard so far.

the story is great, keep you locked in from the beginning but what really got me was Linda jones's narration. it was read like i was listening to a conversation by the characters. like I walked into some family drama that I wasn't supposed to hear. over all great short book.

just okay

A less than 25% of the way in it got really predictable. The ending wasn't a surprise at all, and u feel it was wrote like it was supposed to be.

This is where you go buy the book.

A slow burn within a horror novella is a difficult task. Caitlin Marceau pulls it off with ease and then some with her short story, This is where we talk things out. Subtle terror builds upon itself until an inescapable monster is created. While reading, I literally said out loud to myself, “Wow, that’s good writing.” This book is an award winner for a reason.

spoilers incoming

A perfect example of from bad to worse.

***

A story of a woman trying to reconnect with her estranged mother. Going on a weekend trip to reconcile the relationship. Each step of the way, more hints are dropped of the pure insanity of the mother. Small things at first then gradually become terrifying to say the least. Being held hostage by an insane person in the middle of a snow storm in a cabin miles away from the love of her life.

This book is very well written and allows the reader to feel the tension, frustration and fear.

Mommy Dearest

It’s very dark and oddly familiar while still being fresh. It’s foreboding from the jump and even a touch relatable.

If you liked Beau Is Afraid, this book hits a similar vibe

Terrifying

This was truly one of the scariest books I’ve ever read and I read a ton of horror. It’s very Misery-esque
