Acerca de esta escucha

Beneath the Pacific Ocean, a volcano surges upward, carrying in its fiery heart a mineral more powerful than uranium. When the volcano breaks the ocean’s surface, America and other nations will battle to control what is known as Vulcan’s Forge, a source of limitless, clean, nuclear power.

The secret of Vulcan’s Forge begins to unravel when Mercer, a man of many talents now working for the United States Geologic Survey, learns that the daughter of an old friend is in danger. Saving her takes Mercer from the Oval Office to a secret submarine off Hawaii. On the islands, the secession movement, controlled by a megalomaniac Japanese multimillionaire, has turned violent, and the United States trembles on the brink of civil war.

Du Brul’s first book? Really good!

Great story and storyline development. Written in 1998 and they still used fax machines. Still a good story. Worth a listen!

This is his first book. He gets better

Vulcan's Forge is an easy read/listen. Fast paced, not a lot of depth. Similar to a Dirk Pitt novel. I have read or listened to just about all of Du Brul's books. He is a good author. I had not listened to this title until it was offered free from Audible. I would not pay full price for it, but on a discount it isn't bad.

Du Brul gets better over time.

I can’t give it a low enough score.

Child rape? Really? Absolutely disgusting. The reader of the book sounds as if he gets off reading the vile horrid book. Did not finish.

review to follow

A couple of petty gripes though, all of the Asian characters are consistently referred to as Oriental. I'm pretty sure Asian is the correct name.
Also, and this term is used a lot, the thing that holds the bullets is called a magazine not a clip..

Great story but goofed details

This story was good and has good twists and turns. The problems lie in that it appears the writer has been influenced too much by Hollywood and failed to do adequate research to make many components realistic and therefore detracts from the story as whole as the presentation loses credibility. Things such as 9mm bullets lifting people off their feet and throwing them back against walls, call a gun’s magazine a “clip”, making a comparison of two 9mm firearms and stating that 1 is much more powerful than the other (hint, the Browning Hi-Power is a 9mm 1911 platform gun, and no more powerful than any other despite its name). Great book if you don’t know your guns or ballistics and like the Hollywood special effects written in for you.

not a resent story but I strongly recommend

This was a great story and a excellent presentation. It is fast moving, more or less still creditable even though written in the 1990 and not produced until 1998 aspects of this story could be talking about today.
Only negative the protagonist is a bit "over the top" but in a charming way...

Lots of action

A lot of action and complexity to the story. A few technical mistakes.
To many comments about US Special Forces being mindless and heartless.

An okay book reviewed by an average critic

I'm not, by any means, a professional critic. But, there are some easy things to criticize here.

Magazines, not clips. Find a better narrator for this kind of novel.

That's it. The only other subject to talk about is the one I saw other reviews complaining about. To those who were averse to the "child rape" early on in the book, remember that the age of consent in Japan is 13 years of age. The girl whose virginity is taken (who isn't named sadly) is 15. I don't condone this sort of behavior, obviously, but to believe the author is condoning child rape is ridiculous. And to state that the narrator enjoys the reading of this section is outrageous. Be ashamed of yourselves for your belief in such an awful thing. My understanding of this section of the book is to, in no seriously subtle way for those with a thinking mind, to associate one of the antagonists of this story with an abhorrent behavior. That is the obvious purpose of it, and to assume otherwise is ignorant or blatantly malicious.

Jack, kudos to you, you wrote a decent story. A narrator that fits your style would be a much better option. Try to avoid being canceled for your "misogynistic" writing style, I would like to see more from you down the road.
