Resumen del Editor

Imagine living with a fear so visceral each day that simply walking down the street draws terror to one’s core. That’s the best case scenario for a woman on the streets of Juárez, Mexico. Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur) delivers a stunning one-woman performance that transports listeners from a New York stage to the treacherous streets of Juárez, Mexico, where thousands of women have been murdered in an ongoing epidemic of violence. Written by Isaac Gomez (Steppenwolf’s La Ruta) and based on his intimate interviews, the way she spoke is a raw and riveting exploration of responsibility and follows one playwright's journey to give voice to a city of women silenced by violence, fear, and a world that has turned a deaf ear to their stories. This poignant and unforgettable play is directed by Obie and Lucille Lortel–winner Jo Bonney.

.kate is great. The variety of voices and brave

I was lucky to see Kate performing in Manhattan and was great. Therefore, it was easier for me to reconnect my visual memory with the audio now. There were some things I didn't understand at first, but with this audio were more clear.
Her voice sounds a little different than here.
The story is very sad, but a cruel reality.
I think that performing this story wasn't easy and she did great

Hell on Earth

This the first review I have ever written, so please excuse me if I am not elaborate as to my opinion/s. The book by Isaac Gomez should be a wakeup call to everyone in this world. I found the book compelling and very heart-wrenching. This 'should' prove that something is 'very' 'wrong' in Mexico and in all countries as a matter-of-fact. The abuse of power over people and especially women has to stop! I never thought that I would live to see/hear about such abuse! Murder and mayhem is everywhere. There will be a time on this earth when all the evil monsters get their 'just' reward. I consider myself to be a pacifist in my nature, but, how can one keep from lowering one's self to 'their' level in such times? How can the world be changed without more violence? I wish I knew the answer/s. I gave the storyline a 3 because of the harrowing content. The performance 5 and overall 5.

Hard to hear

This is book is hard to listen to, I knew about the women of Juarez but the personal stories hit hard. I understand this book used to be a play, but I found it hard to follow. The switching back and forth from the story to the narrator was disruptive in this format.
I liked the story and the narrator.

HARD TO HEAR HARD TO UNDERSTAND AND SAD

The story starts so well the premise of someone reading someone's manuscript about a horrible goings on in Juarez was brilliant but the Spanish which there is quite a bit I didn't understand fully. The story could have really been brought to more light even though the subject is dark and scary and sad. I still wonder if the play was ever seen to fruition. the narration though I don't understand Spanish that well was fabulous. Her emotions locked in to the story so amazingly.

Heart wrenching.

This shook me. I knew of the killings but the interpretation of the reading by the narrator makes it profoundly real. I will not be the same.

So moving

I did not think I would like this book-thought it would be another “poor me” story. It is NOT. It is a story of suffering of a class of people-one we should all be aware of. It is extremely moving. Very well written and performed. My heart hurts for the women of the world who face abuse, and their families.

Powerful!

The Audible copy of this play begins with the following: "Warning: portions of this performance include mature language and themes, including description of violence against women. Listener discretion is advised." I wholeheartedly agree. This book was powerful and extremely troubling. I would only amend that warning by saying "...graphic description of violence..." No act is described in the process of it's occurrence, but the state of numerous women's bodies, both possibly where and how they were found and also what the coroner (I'm assuming) deduced from their bodies. As is stated several times throughout the book, this senseless violence is "f*cked up." The world in which the women of Juárez, Mexico (and countless others throughout Mexico) live is terrifying. Kate del Castillo's performance is incredible. The amount of emotion she was able to put into the story with her voice only served to make it more moving. Despite (or maybe because of) the unpleasant nature of this play's content, I would highly recommend it.

The story, the performance, the writing. Had me there, in Juarez, every step, every sight, every sound.
