  • The Black Plaque Podcast is an original podcast series, celebrating stories of black historical figures in London, as part of the Black Plaque Project. Hosted by Dr Jak Beula, founder of Nubian Jak, the community trust that creates plaques, memorials and other products to make black history known.


    In this series, Dr Jak speaks to inspiring, creative, aspiring and influential black Londoners, who discuss with Dr Jak their chosen historical figures, and who they feel, should be a part of the Black Plaque Project. 


    This series features: 

    Kwame Kwei-Armah, Artistic Director of the Young Vic Theatre.

    Bell Ribeiro-Addy, MP for Streatham.

    Kelechi Okafor, Podcaster, Actress and Director.

    Kevin Morosky, Creative and Founder of wearepocc.

    Ronke Lawal, Cultural Commentator, PR Consultant & Founder of Ariatu PR.


    As part of our Black Plaque Project, we've put up 30 Black Plaques in London to celebrate the stories of black historical figures.

In this episode Dr Jak speaks to Kevin Morosky a creative and founder of wearepocc. Kevin’s chosen historical figure is footballer Justin Fashanu, the 1st black million pound footballer, who also became the first professional footballer to come out as gay. Justin is a trailblazer and pioneer, not just in football, but outside of the sport.

In this episode, Dr Jak speaks to Ronke Lawal, Cultural Commentator, PR Consultant & Founder of Ariatu PR. Ronke’s chosen historical figure is Olive Morris, activist and feminist. Olive led protests and demonstrations and helped to set up the Brixton Black Women's Group in 1973, one of Britain's first networks for black women.

Sarah was seen as the epitome of colonial exploitation and racism, of the ridicule and commodification of black people and especially the black woman. Sarah Baartman’s journey is a story that must be told.
