Kevin’s chosen historical figure is footballer Justin Fashanu, the 1st black million pound footballer, who also became the first professional footballer to come out as gay. Justin is a trailblazer and pioneer, not just in football, but outside of the sport.

Sarah was seen as the epitome of colonial exploitation and racism, of the ridicule and commodification of black people and especially the black woman. Sarah Baartman’s journey is a story that must be told.

In this episode Dr Jak speaks to Kwame Kwei-Armah, the Artistic Director of the Young Vic Theatre in London. Kwame’s chosen historical figure is Jamaican writer and poet, Claude McKay was a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance, and his work heavily influenced a generation of black authors including James Baldwin and Richard Wright.
