  • 035: WRESTLING WITH THE SHIP OF THESEUS ON A SEA OF HOT DOG FLAVORED WATER
    Aug 13 2024

In this episode, Wulf and Judge Dredd are coming hot off the heels of their interview with Garry Brents of Memorrhage (Ep. 34), so the Boyze™, joined by Professor Grindstein, delve into their ongoing obsession with the return of nu-metal. In addition, they analyze how genres generally evolve from underground rawness to mainstream gloss. They also explore the “Ship of Theseus” paradox as it relates to band membership: how many times can band members change and still remain the same band? Finally, they dive deep into their siqq piqqs for professional wrestlers. Ooo yea, brother!

  • 034: NU-METAL MAGIC: THE GATHERING OF THE RPG FAITHFUL (AN INTERVIEW WITH GARRY BRENTS)
    Jul 2 2024

In this episode, the Butte Blazzst Boyezzz™ talk with a very special guest by the name of Garry Brents. Garry is the prolific solo artist behind projects such as Sallow Moth, Homesick, and Gonemage, as well as being one half of underground legends, the now-defunct Cara Neir. However, Garry is currently probably most well-known for Memorrhage, a project that incorporates a healthy dose of 90s nu-metal magic combined with metallic hardcore, grind, and industrial metal influences. Memorrhage has been covered by a wide array of underground metal publications as well as national news outlets, such as NPR.

During the Buddt Bladd Beauz™ talk with Garry, they explore the reasons behind the confounding return of nu-metal and how Garry balances the pop-oriented aspects of nu-metal with the aggression of Garry’s other influences. They examine the significance of 90s nostalgia for millennials and zoomers. Finally, they discuss the impact that role-playing games, and specifically Magic: The Gathering, have had on Garry’s creative voice.

  • 033: MANDATORY AI-GENERATED OFFICE METAL AS PART OF NEW OSHA POLICIES, PT. 2
    Jun 11 2024

In this episode, the Butte Blazzter Beaus™ Wulf and Judge Dredd create a horrorcore/black metal crossover band generated completely by AI. The Boyezz™ ask AI for their backstory, the album title and cover of their debut, and the bands they have beef with. Much of this is generated in the style of Joe Pesci’s character from Goodfellas with undertones of Lovecraftian horror, capeesh? The Boyst™ consider the various pronunciations of "gyro" and why Clevelanders might have a claim on having the correct pronunciation. Wulf and Judge Dredd also ask AI to predict how Mötley Crüe’s new hip-hop and country-influenced album with John 5 will be received by burned-out rockers everywhere. Finally, the Boyzst™ share recent stories about drunk cougar moms being blackmailed and disappointing friends in dreams.

Note: the album cover and band photo we refer to in the episode are included as part of the episode cover art

  • 032: MANDATORY AI-GENERATED OFFICE METAL AS PART OF NEW OSHA POLICIES, PT. 1
    May 7 2024

In this episode, the Bidet Blast Boys™ analyze a dream in which there is a meta movie called OSHA: The Movie starring Mel Gibson as a worker so dedicated to work that he was willing to work even while mortally wounded. The Boiz™ dive deep into the etymology of rizz and jizz only to realize that they are actually cognates (not really), and, as a result, the Boyz™ prepare themselves for the oncoming war between the Rizzers, the Jizzers, the Rizz Jizzers, and the Jizz Rizzers. The Boice™ explore the possibility of Egyptian nu-metal as well as other ethnic-inspired nu-metals through the song “The Evil Inherent in Us All” by Karl Sanders. FINALLY, the Boyez™ explore the possibilities and ethical quandaries presented by AI as applied in metal and beyond!

  • 031: BINAURAL PEPTO BISMOL-LACED PIZZA-EATING REBEL DIARRHEA EXTRAVAGANZA (THE TWIZTID FRESH LOST EPISODE)
    Mar 25 2024

(NOTE: this episode was recorded at the end of Summer 2021 and was lost to the annals (read: anals) of Butt Blast history as editing other, more timely episodes took priority. Enjoy!)

The Buddhist Blatt Boizst™ pontificate over the influence of Kyuss, especially the butt rock vocal stylings of John Garcia. They play a true or false quiz game based on an absurd, but somewhat typical, self-serious black metal elitist interview with Satyr from Satyricon. They also touch upon the ethics of lucid dreaming of a fan fiction world in which fictional characters are murdered. Finally, they hypothesize that the counter-serve restaurant by the name of Twisted Fresh (aka Twiztid Fresh) is just a chaotic, Insane Clown Posse-inspired restaurant whose tagline is “We’re REALLY fucked up”. WHOOP WHOOOOOP!!!

How does Wulf actually eat his pizza? Will the Inverted Cross-Examiner puke by the end of the episode? Will Professor Grindstein finally watch the videos of David Ellefson masturbating? Find out on this previously LOST episode of the Butt Metal Blast Cast!

  • 030: I DID IT ALL FOR BEING DOWN WITH THE NU-METAL MOUNTAIN DEW A.D.I.D.A.S. PANTS SICKNESS (an interview with the CEO of Nu-Metal Holiday Kirk)
    Jan 16 2024

Have you seen teenagers recently wear ball chain necklaces, black lipstick, baggy jeans, and Slipknot shirts? Have you wondered what's with all of the bounce rhythms infiltrating metalcore over the last few years? Oh, you haven't heard? NU-METAL IS BACK!

Are you just as confused as we are? Did you, like us, put all of your money on ska coming back whereas nu-metal wasn't even on the bingo card?

In order to elucidate the resurgence of nu-metal, Judge Dredd talked with Holiday Kirk, the self-proclaimed CEO of nu-metal. Holiday is the editor-in-chief of the Nu Metal Agenda, the host of the Nu Metal Agenda podcast, and the man behind Twitter and Instagram's crazy ass moments in nu-metal history accounts.

Why have the conditions been ripe for the current nu-metal resurgence? What are the challenges of promoting and marketing music in the age of social media under the dwindling influence of big record labels? Can the resurgence of nu-metal mark the return of metal and rock music's prominence to mainstream audiences? What can extreme metal musicians and bands learn from nu-metal? Why is Chat Pile nu-metal? These questions and more will be answered in this episode of the BUTT METAL BLAST CAST!

  • 029: MIDWEST BLACK METAL IN A MISSILE SILO ON LIKE 12 HITS OF ACID (an interview with Marsh of Swans ft. Mark of the Beast)
    Dec 28 2023

The Butt Blasters™ have not one, not two, but THREE special guests by the names of CJ, BC, and Mark of the Beast. CJ is a longtime friend of the show and, together with BC, plays in the atmospheric post-black metal band Marsh of Swans. Mark of the Beast is also a longtime friend of the show and is both our resident bad lyrics analyst as well as our kvlt credibility maintainer.

In this episode, the Budd Bladd Boi™ dive deep into Heartwood, Marsh of Swans’ debut full-length. We explore the process of the album’s creation, the conceptual framework behind the album, and why the band’s next album will be lo-fi psychedelic black metal with a horn accompaniment recorded in a missile silo in Wamego, Kansas.

The Butte Blazzterz™ and special guests also analyze bad lyrics from across the metal spectrum as well as the kvlt credibility of different aspects of human culture. Is fast food black metal? Is weed black metal? There is only one way to find out: by listening to the newest episode of the BUTT METAL BLAST CAST.

  • 028: DIABOLICAL DATA VISUALIZATIONS ON THE 10TH SUBLEVEL OF STATISTICAL ANALYSIS (an interview with Metal Stats)
    Dec 4 2023

Have you come across a map on social media showing the ratio of female to male metal musicians by country? Or have you seen a bar graph showing what months the most metal albums are released annually? If you have, there is a good chance that you have come across data visualizations created by Metal Stats.

In this episode, the Boo Boo Butt Boys™ Judge Dredd and Wulf interview Metal Stats about his process for scraping and shaping data from Metal Archives while controlling for variables. They discuss the eternal questions regarding regionalism in metal, such as the infamous Denmark Paradox (a.k.a. in light of having produced Mercyful Fate, why did Denmark never produce black metal to the same degree that the rest of their Scandinavian brethren did?). We also explore the relationship between a country’s GDP and metal produced by that country. Finally, we investigate why both creators and viewers of data visualization need to think critically about data that is being presented.

We make references to many maps and graphs, mostly created by Metal Stats, throughout the episode. Check out the links below to see them for yourselves!
