  • Alien 3 (1992): A Misunderstood Masterpiece Or A Violently Awful Cash Grab? Definitely...
    Jul 21 2024

Ben and Rob leap into the fire of controversy with ‘Alien 3’, the debut feature film of legendary director David Fincher and widely considered a staggeringly disappointing film both critically and commercially. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dance and Lance Henriksen, ‘Alien 3’ follows Ellen Ripley after her Sulaco escape pod crashes on a planet populated by violent male inmates; and violently undoes huge amounts of story work established by James Cameron in his eighties megahit ‘Aliens’. Widely considered a terrible end to Ripley’s story, this film is nonetheless Rob’s absolute favourite entry in the franchise; MUCH to Ben’s utter horror and disgust.

So what exactly does this botched sequel offer that can’t be found in its superior prequels? How did the most astounding of sci-fi franchises fall so low? Has there ever been quite such an unlikely string of stupid, repeated, wilful, stupid, greedy and above all STUPID mistakes made in the production of a movie?

  • X (2022): Ti West's Love Letter To Seventies Horror and Pornography Has Shocking Depth!
    Jul 14 2024

Ben and Rob get steamy with ‘X’, Ti West’s first movie in his trilogy of period piece horrors starring Mia Goth. With the all-star cast rounded out by Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and Scott Mescudi, ‘X’ paints the screen red when an adult movie crew rent the airBnB from hell from a couple of rural farmers.

But does the film hold up to the incredible weight of every reference and homage it crowbars into it’s short runtime? Can adult films also be cinema, as crew director RJ claims? And is ‘X’ in fact the most tightly written horror film since Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’? CONSUUUME to find out all this and much, much more!

  • Aliens (1989): The Single Greatest Sci-Fi Sequel Of All Time Covered By Obsessed Idiots
    Jul 7 2024

Ben and Rob revisit LV246 for the seconds of their full Alien franchise series, this week tackling the sci-fi classic ‘Aliens’. Directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Beihn, Paul Reiser, Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen, ‘Aliens’ is often cited as the ultimate sci fi action film of the nineteen-eighties and for setting the standard for every film in the genre ever since. Ripley returns to LV246 as advisor to a company of Colonial Marines investigating the lost signal of its new colony, and makes box office and movie history in the process.

But without the prime movers of Ridley Scott and Dan O’Bannon on board for this sequel, does enough of the original DNA survive? What’s the deeper meaning of this film's heavy Vietnam referencing? And how is this film linked to other eighties classics like Little Shop Of Horrors and Burton’s Batman? • Pacific Rim: Guillermo Del Toro Shows Michael Bay How To Kaiju
    Jun 30 2024

Ben and Rob drift together and pilot ‘Pacific Rim’, Guillermo Del Toro’s homage to all things kaiju and gundam. When kaiju invade Earth through a hole in reality, it’s up to a plucky team of humans to pilot giant mecha suit Jaegers in order to cancel the apocalypse. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman ‘Pacific Rim’ was a hit at the box office but has failed to pick up the same devotion seen by the Toho or MonsterVerse franchises.

But how did Guillermo Del Toro end up directing a western action movie anyway? Where is James Cameron when you need him? And how come Ben loves kaiju, loves Neon Genesis, loves Guillermo Del Toro but has never seen this film before now!?

  • Alien (1979): The Single Greatest Horror SciFi Of All Time Covered By Obsessed Idiots
    Jun 23 2024

Ben & Rob get sticky with Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece ‘Alien’, starring Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. When the overworked and underpaid crew of the USS Nostromo dock on a derelict planet, what they find on the surface might just be the deadliest organism in existence. Released to critical and commercial success, ‘Alien’ has incubated and matured into the defining sci-fi horror film of its century, setting a standard that has not been matched since.

But how can two mentally ill men with full-time jobs ever hope to cover a film not only vitally important to them, but cinema itself? Are Ben & Rob going to treat this movie with the clear respect it deserves? How does a film like this even get conceived, let alone executed, so perfectly? And what kind of xenomorph is Ben?!

  • Godzilla Minus One (2023): Japan Reclaims It's Crown As King Of The Monsters
    Jun 16 2024

Ben & Rob watch ‘Godzilla Minus One’ wipe out our tissue box for ALL the reasons; 2023’s Japanese Toho franchise entry became a global sensation, winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and making over $100million at the box office. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki and starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe and Yuki Yamada, ‘Godzilla: Minus One’ tells the harrowing tale of a failed kamikaze pilot’s search for meaning in the wake of total devastation, through the medium of a gigantic lizard god smashing everything.

Having covered every Legendary Pictures entry into their western Godzilla ‘MonsterVerse’ franchise, will returning to the Japanese source reveal new ways of seeing scales? Why is this film such a brilliant companion piece to Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’? And which version of Godzilla would Ben & Rob least enjoy sharing a train carriage with?

  • Abigail (2024): Fresh New Blood In The Genre or Cold To The Touch?
    Jun 9 2024

Ben & Rob take a bite of ‘Abigail’, the 2024 horror comedy from the directors of ‘Ready or Not’ Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. When six criminals kidnap a young vampire, they swiftly become child’s prey rather than child predators. Starring Alisha Weir as the titular character alongside Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, and Giancarlo Esposito, ‘Abigail’ made a profit at the box office, reviewed well and caught Ben’s attention for it’s clear love of eighties B-Horror.

But is this bite of a movie worth the chew on our show? Can Rob find anything in this film he can enjoy? And what’s the biggest animal our co-hosts could beat in a bare knuckle fight to the death?

  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024): Stop Thinking And Just Have Fun Watching A Monkey Punch A Lizard
    Jun 2 2024

Ben & Rob roar back to life as they revive The Legendary MonsterVerse series, with this year’s box-office kaiju ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’! Despite an awkward name and a lukewarm reception from critics, this movie is not only the second highest grossing film of the series but of the entire 2024 box-office! Starring Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ has an awkward name but a crystal clear mission statement: All Kaiju, All Of The Time.

But with this many disparate entries in a now ten-year-old franchise, is this universe looking a little long in the carbon-fibre tooth? Does the movie live up to the romcom expectations we had last year when we covered every MonsterVerse movie ever? And have we finally solved the mystery of Kong’s gender?!
