  • Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: How Diet Affects Us
    Jul 26 2024

For our second Holistic Health Anonymous, I sent out a topic for all my followers to answer on an upcoming podcast episode: What diet or nutrition plan has negatively or positively impacted you or a family member's health?

This time, I had two similar responders. Interestingly, both of these perspectives included gluten. Maybe their experiences could help you with the symptoms you're experiencing, too!

Listen to this month's Holistic Health Anonymous and at the end of the episode I'll announce next month's question! Would you like to share your experience?

  • Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Vaccines
    Jul 19 2024

"I thought that people would get healthier and that there’d be changes in our environment so that things would get cleaner and the opposite has happened… we’re seeing higher rates of toxins in our air, food, and water. Staying healthy is now a proactive part of life to prevent disease."

Dr. Judith Thompson is a Naturopathic Doctor. She graduated from the National College of Natural Medicine in 2005. She initially worked as a doula and later as a birth assistant and midwife for 18 years. Dr. Thompson has published articles in international medical journals and is the co-author of a children’s health book.

If we're comparing the number of vaccines children receive today versus just 30 years ago, the number has tripled. Dr. Thompson supports families who wish to vaccinate and families who do not wish to vaccinate. Her children's health book speaks to the ways in which families can support their children through whichever path they choose. Because this is not about right or wrong choices. This is about selecting the path that makes sense for your lifestyle and your health.

The truth is, we do not live in a vacuum so we can't blame any one thing. But there is a lot of research finally being done on the impact of government-recommended medical interventions and so we have to look to the research and continue to be our own advocates.

  • Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Glyphosates
    Jul 12 2024

Glyphosates are the most common pesticides in agriculture. Developed in 1950 and commercialized in 1974, glyphosates were patented in 1964 to bind to minerals and clear them out of pipes…

Thanks to Round-up, glyphosates are now present in more than 90% of soybeans, corn, cotton, and sugar beets. Additionally, according to the National Library of Medicine's 2022 published study, residues were found in the urine of 60–80% of the general population in the United States.

We are each continually exposed to varying levels of glyphosates via run-off in our water, through our skin from what's in the air around us, and through the food we eat.

So, what can we do? As you know, I feel there's always a way to enforce good-better-best practices in our daily lives that can help prevent some of the side effects of this harmful chemical or continually detox after exposure. I'm glad to share some ways I've helped protect my patients, my family, and myself from glyphosates in this episode.

  • Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Non-alcoholic Alternatives
    Jul 5 2024

Is there anything better than the refreshing sound of that 'click' of a tab on a hot summer day? Today, I'm sharing my taste test and my opinion on several non-alcoholic beverages on the market. I get many of them from Thrive and some you can find at your everyday grocery store. Honestly, by this point in my pregnancy, I am starting to crave my favorite bubbly, summer drink. I truly think I've found at least one alternative I'm going to keep stocked in my refrigerator regardless of being pregnant - it was that good! Of course, there are always good-better-best options and I'm happy to share a few I've found. Let me know if you've tried any of these and if you agree with my assessments. I'd love to know your opinion.

  • Holistic Health Anonymous Question: Alternative Medicine
    Jun 28 2024

I sent out a topic for all my followers to answer on an upcoming podcast episode: Tell me about a time when alternative medicine helped you and maybe when traditional medicine did not.

  • Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Ibogaine Therapy
    Jun 21 2024

It’s a root to treat the root cause…Tabernanthe iboga (iboga) is an evergreen rainforest shrub native to Central Africa and Trevor Millar has utilized its healing properties to treat folks like you and me who are addicts or recovering addicts, veterans or suffering from PTSD, battling traumatic brain injuries, struggling with anxiety or depression, and even Parkinson's disease patients.

Trevor is the owner of Ambio Life Sciences and his psycho-spiritual treatment is legal in Tijuana, Mexico where he operates two coastal homes that are setup with medical providers, chefs, and caring specialists.

In the early 1970s, so many plant medicines that have psychedelic properties were outlawed in the U.S. and the U.N. followed suit along with much of the rest of the world after that. But Professor David Nutt who was an English neuropsychopharmacologist put out a chart in the early 2010s that showed the #1 most harmful drug is alcohol followed by heroin while psychedelics are at the opposite end of the scale.

  • Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Interview with Karin Reiter
    Jun 14 2024

My guest today is Karin G. Reiter. Her nutrition journey started when she was diagnosed at the age of 18 with her first autoimmune disease (Hashimoto’s thyroid disease). She then doubled down after being diagnosed with celiac disease following the birth of her second child. She did not see much improvement in her symptoms or antibody levels following a conventional medicinal approach. So, she began to study medical nutrition and eventually left her career in law and finance to devote her life to helping others through the healing power of food. She’s consulted some of the largest organizations all over the world (McKinsey, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Paypal) and has written several e-books including a children’s cookbook. She currently resides in Israel and it was amazing to get this chance to chat with her and share our conversation with you!

“You either pay the farmer or you pay medical bills.” Karin helps her clients get to the root causes of their symptoms which starts with the basics: nutrition, sleep, water, identifying toxins, and limiting stress. As Hippocrates stated, “All disease begins in your gut”. Which may not be 100% true, but we need to consume 30 different fruits and vegetables a week + quality protein in order to attain good gut microbiome. Ibuprofen, the birth control pill, antibiotics, alcohol, and stress have killed our gut microbiome! It’s no wonder that we’re seeing more 18-20 year old women who suffer from depression and anxiety, PCOS, endometriosis, and who are being diagnosed with diabetes…

I also loved our chat about kids and how we teach them good nutrition when what’s often available and marketed to them are crappy foods. It was nice to hear another perspective across the world that echoes my practice and my research.
