  • Ep. 30 - Shingles (Varicella Zoster)
    Jun 25 2024

Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is a disease that triggers a painful skin rash. It is caused by the same virus as chickenpox, and about one in three adults who had chickenpox will develop this condition later in life.

About 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime. An estimated 1.2 million people get shingles each year in this country.

Anyone who's had chickenpox may develop shingles. After you've had chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in your body for the rest of your life. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles. It isn't known what reactivates the virus, but thought to be due to decreased immune system brought on by stress.

In this podcast we discuss the clinical appearance and symptoms of shingles, vaccines available and other preventive methods to reduce your risk for developing shingles, possible long term side effects, and treatment options.

  • Ep. 26 - ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
    May 28 2024

Join us in today’s podcast with our good friend, Joe DiNoia, who is medically involved with ALS treatment and whose life has personally been affected by ALS. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease after the famous New York Yankee baseball player who was affected with the disorder, affects the motor neurons that send signals from the brain to the spinal cord to voluntary muscles throughout the body. As ALS causes these motor neurons to deteriorate and eventually die, signals are disrupted and muscles weaken and atrophy. Up to 10% of all cases of ALS are familial, which means that a genetic mutation is the cause. The other 90% or more of cases are considered sporadic, which means there is no known genetic cause. Most people who develop ALS are between the ages of 40 and 70, with an average onset of 55. There are many cases of people in their twenties and thirties who have been diagnosed with ALS. This “young onset” ALS typically refers to people younger than 45 years old and accounts for about 10% of all cases. We discuss symptoms, theoretical causes, ways to diagnose, prognosis, and treatment options for ALS. Tune in to help spread the awareness of ALS.
