  • Lamar Reviews - "Wednesday" (Airdate 12/16/2022)
    Dec 16 2022
Lamar Reviews - "Wednesday" (Airdate 12/16/2022) There are two groups of people in this world, one group that watched the Addams Family, and the other watched the Munsters. You may try to say that some people watched them both, to that I say, “Pick a side! Get off the fence! You can’t have it both ways! I am without a doubt, in the Addams family group. It was way ahead of its time as far as edginess, the casting was spot on, and it was and still is hilarious. To this day it still holds up. Each character had its own quirks, and they all played off of each other flawlessly. Lisa Loring played Wednesday in the original TV show. Christina Ricci did a fantastic job playing Wednesday in 2 movies in the 90s, so the Wednesday bar, was set very high. Jenna Ortega has just done an Olga Korbut Dead Loop Back Flip, off that bar.   The series starts off with Wednesday in public school responding to her brother Pugsley, being bullied by some athletes. Wednesday’s revenge boarders on attempted murder and she gets expelled and sent to Nevermore Academy, a school for students that are not like other students. This school is a mixture of werewolves, vampires, mermaid sirens, telepaths, and such. Her parents, Gomez and Morticia, played by Luis Guzman, and Catherine Zeta-Jones are very excited, because this is where they both went to school and where they met and fell in love. Just to make sure Wednesday is ok, they send Thing to stay with her. We actually don’t see much of the rest of the Addams family. Gomez and Morticia are in just a couple of episodes, Uncle Fester, played by Fred Armisen is only in one episode, and we barely get a glimpse of Lurch. The name of the series is Wednesday, and she is what it is about.   Because of her run in with the athletes at the other school she is required to go to counseling, and she does not get along with the headmistress, Larissa Weems, played by Gwendoline Christie, who happened to attend the school with Morticia, and they were frenemies at best.   The storyline is a season long mystery involving a big toothy monster, plus visions that Wednesday gets about the school being destroyed, and her part in it. All the while the pressure of the sarcastic, scornful Wednesday having a roommate that is bubbly and way too friendly, and having 2 boys vying for her affections, of which she has none. The school, like Hogwarts is divided in houses and they have all kinds of competitions. And there is a great episode where Wednesday awkwardly winds up attending a school dance.   Ortega’s performance with her non-blinking stare, along with her acid wit delivered with the appropriate eyerolls is fantastic, and the fact that this is directed by Tim Burton, takes it to the next level.   There are 8 episodes, 45 minutes long, Rated TV-14   Yes, this has a written for teens vibe, but just like Stranger Things, it appeals to all ages. Don’t just take my word for it, Wednesday has had over 1 Billion hours of viewing in the first 28 days.   With these kinds of numbers there is no doubt that there will be another season. And you can look forward to seeing Jenna Ortega’s career keep getting bigger.   My Score: 5 Budweisers and 2 finger snaps Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

  • Lamar Reviews - "Violent Night" (Airdate 12/9/2022)
    Dec 9 2022
Lamar Reviews - "Violent Night" (Airdate 12/9/2022) I have a few favorite Christmas movies I watch at some point, during the Christmas holidays. Elf, the original Grinch with Boris Karloff, not the new animated one, and certainly not that repugnant drivel that Jim Carey embarrassed himself in. Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and the ultimate Santa Claus movie, Miracle on 34th Street. But Violent Night might make the list, we’ll see. It has Santa Claus, albeit a little on the weathered side, not so jolly since fewer and fewer people believe in the Christmas magic, and most kids have become greedy, ungrateful, and self-centered, and are only interested in video games.   We are introduced to Santa, played by Stanger Things’ David Harhour, sitting at a bar, taking stock of his life and job, enjoying a few beers. When asked how long he has been a Santa, he replies, “Longer than I can remember, I’m pretty sure I started it.” Over a thousand years ago he was a Norseman raider and a ruthless warrior, that wielded a hammer named Skullcrusher. Later he became Santa Claus because of Christmas Magic, that he himself still does not completely understand.  We also meet a little girl named Trudy, played by Leah Brady, and her divorced parents, Jason and Linda, played by Alex Hassell and Alexis Louder. Jason’s dysfunctional family is mega rich and everyone is controlled by his mother Gertrude, played by Beverly D’Angelo. It seems that they have 300 million dollars in cash in a large vault, and a large group of thieves lead by, code name Scrooge, played by John Leguizamo. Santa arrives as this is starting to happen, and he wants no part of it. As he is getting ready to get back in his sleigh, and head to the next house, he sees Trudy. He looks her up on his list and she is not only on the nice list, but the list of her qualities convinces him to stay and help her. It doesn’t take long for Jolly Ole Saint Nick to turn into a hammer swinging, ass kicking, Viking!   The movie is just shy of 2 hours, Rated R for strong bloody violence, a lot of it, language and some sexual references.   The movie easily could have sucked, but it didn’t. It is a compilation of Die Hard and Home Alone. Santa and Trudy communicate through walkie-talkies like John McClane and Urkle’s dad did in Die Hard, and Trudy sets up booby traps for the bad guys like Kevin did in Home Alone. I kept waiting for Santa to utter his version of “Yippee Ki Yay, Mother Trucker!”, but he didn’t. But make no mistake, Santa Claus did not disappoint. The violence was extremely vicarial, but comedic at the same time. My ribs are sore from Carla elbowing me to stop laughing and cackling out loud. For me it was like riding a roller-coaster, I could not quit laughing.    Harbour did a great job playing Santa as reluctant hero, that became not so reluctant as the movie progressed. John Leguizamo is no Alan Rickman, but then who is? The big surprise was Cam Gigandet as Jason’s sister’s boyfriend, Morgan Steel, an out of work, action star. He was great.   Believe it or not, among all the split skulls, icicles through the eyeballs, and general bloody deaths, there were some tender moments, some life reflections, a few reconciliations, and warm Christmas message of hope for all.   My Score 4 Christmas Cookies and a cold glass of milk. • Lamar Reviews - "The Menu" (Airdate 12/2/2022)
    Dec 2 2022
Lamar Reviews - "The Menu" (Airdate 12/2/2022) I have spent my life being in love with food. It has been the center point in my life. I love making it, as much as I love eating it. My mantra is, there is a best way to make every food taste the best it possibly can, and there is no such thing as “too much trouble” to accomplish that. I love the dining experience, whether it is a really good bacon cheeseburger in some hole in the wall joint, or a dry aged bone in ribeye in a place where you have to make reservations two weeks in advance, and they call green beans haricot vert. I love it all! So, when I see a movie titled The Menu, I’m in. When I see in the preview the Head Chef is played by Ralph Fiennes, and it also has Anya Taylor-Joy, from the Queen’s Gambit, I knew I had to see it.    Turns out this is a dark thriller, not quite horror, but also a good dose of dark comedy, especially if you get the food references. Fiennes plays Chef Slowik, who has worked his way up in the culinary world to the point of having his restaurant on an Island that can only be accessed by boat. The fact that it is not easy to get to only enhances the exclusivity. Only 12 people are allowed for a dinner, and each plate cost $1250.00. Each course has a story to go along with it, and is not to be “eaten”, they are to be “tasted”. For me this is code for, “your gonna want to stop at a drive thru on the way home”.   The people eating at this meal are, a once famous actor that nobody recognizes now, played by John Leguizamo, and his assistant Felicity, played by Aimee Carrero. Lillian, a big-time food critic, played by Janet McTeer, and her kiss up editor, Ted, A couple of regulars, Richard and Anne, played by Reed Birney and Judith Light. Three co-workers from a high-end tech company, and Slowik’s mother. And finally, A foodie named Tyler, played by Nicholas Hoult, who is a fanboy and feels like this is the greatest night of his entire life, and his date Margot, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who turns out is a last-minute substitute for his girlfriend that broke up with him.   The diners are all there for different reasons. But they all have one thing in common, they are pretentious jerks. The only one that is not, is Margot. She was a last-minute substitute, that Chef Slowik had not planned for. She is a problem for him. He has planned this meal down to the last detail, and she is not supposed to be there.   The movie is 1 hour 47 minutes, Rated-R for violent content, language, and sexual references   This movie is about how out of hand the high-end restaurant business has come. They are not selling food, they are selling a lifestyle, and the food critics help them do it. This industry is directed at the people who have the money and don’t mind spending it, and as soon as a restaurant becomes “impossible” to get into, these people’s lives depend on getting in. This allows the restaurant to give them an ounce of some meat that was flown in from an island halfway around the world, put it on a plate, throw on a sprig of green something, and drop a few drops of different colored sauces in a pattern, and charge $150.00 for it.   The movie is clever, well written, and the scenes where Chef Slowik and Margot and together, are, dare I say, delicious, to the point of being succulent!   My Score: 5 Ice Cold Budweisers Learn more about your ad choices. • Lamar Reviews - "Tulsa King" (Airdate 11/18/2022)
    Nov 18 2022
Lamar Reviews - "Tulsa King" (Airdate 11/18/2022) If you listen to my reviews you know that I’m a Stallone Fan. I’m talking about an unadulterated, unapologetic, watch everything he’s in fan. I will admit, the idea of a TV series starring Sylvester Stallone, never occurred to me. Turns out, just like always, Sly, he lets me call him that, has not let me down!   Stallone plays mobster Dwight Mangredi, who served 25 years in prison for a murder his boss committed. He wrongfully assumed that keeping his mouth shut for those 25 years would earn him a huge welcome home, a suitcase full of cash, and a promotion in the mob. Instead they ship him off to Tulsa Oklahoma and say this is your territory, have at it. Of course, after 25 years in prison he finds that the outside world has changed. Evidently, he was in solitary confinement, with no TV, no newspaper, no contact with outside world, because he has no idea what Uber is, and has no inkling about Marijuana dispensaries being legal, and how they work. I’m sure it is less about his understanding, as it about how funny it is when his “Old Gangster” persona has to react to it. And it is very funny.     When he figures out how the marijuana thing works Mangredi offers the owner protection. The owner makes the obvious observation that the only thing he needs protection from is Mangredi. Mangredi just shrugs, and takes his cut. Stallone does a great job with this character and gives him many layers. One moment in the middle of beating the crap out of someone he will come up with a quote or reference to an ancient Greek Scholar, followed by the explanation that he “read a lot of books”. The next moment he is being a gentleman and giving his coat to a woman having a chill. He can switch from a Teddy Bear to bloodthirsty hooligan in the blink of an eye. I can’t speak for the next episode but this one caught my attention.   The show is on Paramount Plus, the first season is 10 episodes that are 40 minutes long, and it’s Rated TV-MA with a lot of rough language, some violence, lot of drugs.   This is another show created by Taylor Sheridan who, in case don’t know, is responsible for Yellowstone, it’s off shoot 1883, The Mayor of Kingstown, which is a really awesome show starring Jeremy Renner, and many other movies and series. Right now, Sheridan is the hottest thing going.   Yellowstone has just started it's 5th season, and is going strong. Whether or not Stallone can get multiple seasons out of Tulsa King remains to be seen. I think it is very possible because, Taylor Sheridan has proven himself a writer capable of putting words to paper, that in the right hands, can become a hit. And Sylvester Stallone, not matter what you personally think about him, is a man that has done more with the talent he has, than anyone ever gave him credit for. Given the right storyline and dialog, I believe he can deliver a performance that will guarantee multiple seasons.   Stallone is like his greatest character Rocky, you can knock him down, but you can’t knock him out!   My Score: 4 Ice Cold King of Beers for the King of Tulsa! • Lamar Reviews - "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" (Airdate 11/11/2022)
    Nov 11 2022
Lamar Reviews - "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" (Airdate 11/11/2022) You start watching a documentary, getting ready to learn the story of how Al Yankovic rose to fame. I’m expecting something along the line of Bohemian Rhapsody, the movie about Queen, or Rocket Man about Elton John. And just like those “based on a true story” movies I expected some exaggeration, a few not quite true story lines to make the story more entertaining. I was a good twenty minutes into the movie when I realized that this was not that kind of documentary movie. I began to realize that I was watching Weird Al do exactly the same thing to the musician documentary, that he did to the songs that he spoofed and satirized. At that point I knew he was a master at what he did, and had cemented himself as one of the Kings of Parody.   Having Daniel Radcliffe play Weird Al was not only a surprise, turns out it was a stroke of genius, he really got into the part and did a great job. Al’s parents Mary and Nick were played by Julianne Nicholson and Toby Huss. I began to wonder about the accuracy of the film when their treatment of Al was so over the top. Such as sitting him down and saying, “We are forced to require you to stop being you, and we need you to forget any dreams or aspirations that you may have.”    To give you some idea of how much this movie differs from the real story, in the movie his parents hate the idea of him playing the accordion. He had to hide in the closet to practice. In real life a door to door salesman came to the door selling musical instruments. There was a choice between guitar and accordion, and his parents picked the accordion. But trust me, the movie version is way, way funnier. The same goes with his first son My Bologna which is a parody of My Sharona. In reality he wrote the song in college and played it around campus. They taped it and sent it to the Dr. Dementor Show. In the movie Dr. Dementor is played by Rain Wilson from The Office. It became an instant hit on his show. When the Knack came to his college, he managed to get back stage and introduced him self to lead singer Doug Feiger as the guy who wrote My Bologna. Feiger introduced him to the president of Capital Records and they signed him. Again, the movie version is hilarious.      The movie is an hour and 48 minutes, Rated TV-14   In the movie it turns out that his parodies are bigger hits than the original songs. Weird Al becomes the biggest selling song artist in the history of the world. Also, the movie explores his years of substance abuse. In fact, Al doesn’t smoke, or drink, and is a strict vegetarian. No wonder they added all of this stuff to his story. His actual story, although amazing as it is, would have made a movie that lasted 18 minutes, and the audience would have slept through the last 7 minutes. The Yankovic bump is real. Most artists saw an increase in sales after Weird Al parodied one of their songs. Madonna actually suggested he parody Like a Virgin with Like a Surgeon.  The movie does get a little Squirrely towards the end with Pablo Escobar, but it is very well written and very very funny! • Lamar Reviews - "Ticket to Paradise" (Airdate 11/4/2022)
    Nov 4 2022
Lamar Reviews - "Ticket to Paradise" (Airdate 11/4/2022) If I was going to make a no risk movie, I would find two actors that have been around a while that everybody loves. It would really help if they had been in some movies together, and that they were both gorgeous. I would stick them in an amazing location, have them be bitter enemies the first half, and of course be madly in love before the credits roll. This is that movie.   Ticket to Paradise stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney as divorced parents Georgia and David Cotton. He is an architect and she owns an art gallery. They have a daughter Lily, played by Kaitlyn Dever, who is graduating Law School. Georgia and David both loath the ground the other one walks on. They despise each other and can’t stand to be in the same room. The opening of the movie has David and Georgia relating how the proposal went to other people. Each perspective is the exact opposite of the other, as in, David saying, “Her parents thought she was too young”. While Georgia’s memory is “They thought he wasn’t good enough for me.” The chemistry of them bickering one liners back and forth is very entertaining.   For graduation they send Lily and her roommate Wren, played by Billie Lourd, to Bali. There she meets an Island boy named Gede, played by Maxime Bouttier, and falls madly in love. She decides to skip being a lawyer, marry Gede, and farm seaweed. Although Georgia and David hate each other, the one thing they agree on is they have to stop Lily from throwing her future away by stopping this marriage. They accomplish this by “Trojan Horsing” Lilly, buy acting like they are all in for the marriage, but at the same time secretly sabotaging it.   As an added side story Georgia’s much younger boyfriend Paul, played by Lucas Bravo, who happens to be a handsome airline pilot shows up.   The movie is 1 hour and 44 minutes, Rated PG-13, just like all good little romantic comedies.   Let’s be honest, you are not watching this because it will be life changing, you are not looking for a complicated emotional plot, and you won’t be talking about it 3 weeks from now. You watch this to see two beautiful people, that have enough talent, and a shared chemistry, to entertain you against a breathtaking backdrop.   It did seem that Clooney and Roberts were trying to downplay their Hollywood good looks. Julia Roberts spent most of the movie in jumpsuits that honestly looked like a mechanic wearing oversized coveralls. But when she puts on clothes that actually fit, and laughs that huge laugh she has, you are reminded just how glamorous she really is. Clooney did his best to tone it down, but he could put on a burlap sack and crawl through a sewer, once he twinkles his eyes and cocks his head like he doesn’t understand, he’s the handsomest, most charming man on the planet.   It is totally worth your time and money to see Clooney and Roberts dancing to House of Pain’s Jump Around! Yes, the movie is totally predictable, but just like the Holiday Inn, the best surprise, is no surprise.   My Score: 4 Cold Refreshing Buds Learn more about your ad choices. • Lamar Reviews - "The Watcher" (Airdate 10/28/2022)
    Oct 28 2022
Lamar Reviews - "The Watcher" (Airdate 10/28/2022) This is a new Netflix series that hit number one on the watch list. People were raving about it to me and said I had to watch it. It is based on the real-life story of the Broaddus family, who bought their dream home, and were then threatened, spied on, and finely driven out of their house, by a mysterious stalker who called themselves The Watcher.   Dean and Nora Brannock, played by Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts, and their two children find their dream home in a Ney Jersey Hamlet, but they can’t afford it. Dean cashes out all their savings, and retirement to make the down payment. He feels he can take the risk because he is about to be made partner in his firm. Anybody want to guess how that is going to turn out? No sooner do they move in does Dean tear out the entire kitchen to remodel it because his famous red sauce would stain the counter tops. What? Wait this man just cashed out their entire savings, their retirement, and possibly drugged his grandmother and sold one of her kidneys, to buy a their “dream home” and before they get moved in, is remodeling the kitchen? I’ve watched enough HGTV to know, this ain’t a dream home, it’s a fixer upper. All because of his red sauce stain? How about you buy some really good paper towels? Not to mention, where do you get the money for the remodel? I’m ready to quit this show and I’m only 37 minutes in.   Then they get the note from “The Watcher” saying they are being watched, and that they should give the house “what it wants” does it want a fresh coat of paint, or the immortal souls of your children? Not only are they getting these threatening letters, they are surrounded by kooky neighbors. Margo Martindale and Richard Kind play Maureen and Mitch, the most offensive couple you could have living next door. Pearl, the neighbor historian who talks to trees, is played by Mia Farrow. The police detective, played by Christopher McDonald is absolutely no help, and Jennifer Coolidge, as Karen, the Real Estate agent from hell will keep you from ever wanting to buy or sell a house. She actually steals the series, nobody could have played her character better.    There are 7 episodes 52 minutes long, Rated TV-MA   Just like all “based on a true story” shows, this series is 10% what really happened and 90% fluff. This fluff includes evil spirits, murder, drugs, and the kitchen sink, Premier Copper Farmhouse, with apron, no less. It is the same story told a different way. You are in a house that is haunted, possessed, built over an ancient grave yard, next door to a poultry processing plant, or just bad neighbors, and you refuse to be run out of your house! OK, great, quit your bitching and stay there, nobody cares.   I wanted to quit, but Carla and I had to know who was writing the letters. I almost skipped from episode 3 to 7 to get it over with, but I didn’t. Wished I had. I’m not going as far as saying it has a terrible ending, because I don’t want anybody to miss a series they might enjoy. I want to allow you to judge for yourself. But, it does have a terrible, unfulfilling, anticlimactic ending.   My Score: 2 Buds, only for Jennifer Coolidge’s performance. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

  • Lamar Reviews - "Halloween Ends" (Airdate 10/21/2022)
    Oct 21 2022
Lamar Reviews - "Halloween Ends" (Airdate 10/21/2022) First off, if you believe that this is the end of the Halloween movies, I’d love to sell you an extended warranty on an ocean front timeshare in Colorado. This is the end of the latest trilogy based on the Halloween movie franchise. The only thing that will ever kill this thing, is lack of profits.   I do believe you are going to hear hard core Halloween fans gripe and moan about this movie. They are going to say, “There is not enough of the Shape, Michael Myers, there is not enough stabbing, neck snapping, face stomping, and 1.75 MPH chase scenes, that the victim never wins. Every Halloween movie, good or bad has been basically the same. You have a mindless killer that murders people in the most gruesome manner imaginable, and cannot be killed. Shoot, stab, set on fire, doesn’t matter, he always pops back up. But this time it is different.   If you look at the trailers it seems this is going to be a death match between Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the only girl to survive all the way through, and Michael. I’m not saying that they don’t see each other and have a tussle, but that is not the main point in the movie. This turns out to be more of a psychological thriller that examines the idea of the last two movies; is Michael Myers pure evil, or is evil something that is in everyone, and under certain conditions, be nurtured into its purest form inside anyone, giving the right circumstances? That last sentence is a deeper plot than all the Halloween movies put together.   It has been a while since the last major bloody Halloween, and everybody is back to normal. Laurie is writing a book about her life so that she can face her fears and move on. Because people always want someone to blame, some of the people in the town hold her responsible for stirring up Michael Myers, and getting a bunch of people killed. Her granddaughter Allyson, played by Andi Matichak, has lost both parents and become a depressed loner. She meets Corey Cunningham, played by Rohan Campbell, who’s in his 20s and has a tragic incident in his past that has left him in the same shape as Allyson. Since they are kindred spirits, they become romantically intertwined.    What makes this movie different is the main storyline in this movie is not Michael or Laurie, it is Corey. He starts out as a good kid, has a tragedy, the town turns their back, his peers bully him and make his life miserable. What happens to a good kid who is told over and over, he is a bad person?   This is a totally different Halloween, and probably the most interesting one ever. But is that what Halloween fans want? I say, if all you want is Michael Myers killing people, there are a dozen of those Halloweens you can watch. Trust me, we still get Michael Myers, stabbing right along, and Laurie Strode, after fighting him for 44 years, is not putting up with his crap.   This was a bold move, and only the box office will tell if it paid off or not. But never fear, even at this moment, somebody is writing a script for the next Halloween, and we will see another version within a couple of years.   My Score: 4 Buds Learn more about your ad choices.
