  • Omamas: Roma women fighting generational poverty in Slovakia
    Oct 30 2023

In this episode of Meanings of Cohesion we travel to Slovakia. The first six years of a person's life are crucial for neurodevelopment. Growing up in poverty can negatively impact your health, behaviour and future. Such is the case for Roma children living in segregated settlements in Slovakia, who are already far behind their peers before they even enter the educational system - where they subsequently face discrimination. Women from Roma communities, so-called "omamas", are helping Roma parents to change this.

  • Slovenia, in bee heaven
    Oct 23 2023

In this episode of Meanings of Cohesion we travel to Eastern Slovenia. Whilst the rest of the world worries about the decline in bees and the impact on food production, Slovenia has succeeded in reversing the trend over the past few years. Today, the country has become a veritable paradise for the yellow and black insects, cared for by more than 11,000 passionate beekeepers like Andreja Stankovič. As well as looking after the queens and their colonies, she teaches others the ins and outs of beekeeping and the secrets of the Slovenian model.

  • How Cyprus is using its cultural heritage to heal divides
    Oct 17 2023

In this episode of Meanings of Cohesion we travel to Rizokarpaso, on the island of Cyprus. For almost 40 years, Cyprus and its inhabitants have been divided. In 1974, the Turkish army invaded the northern third of the Mediterranean island in response to a coup d'état by nationalists who wanted to annex the territory to Greece. One hundred and sixty thousand Greek Cypriots fled to the south, while a smaller number of Turkish Cypriots found refuge in the north. Despite this partition, a handful of Greek Cypriots chose to remain in their village, Rizokarpaso, which has since become an isolated enclave on Turkish Cypriot land. However, bicommunal initiatives are trying to build bridges between the two communities, helping them to restore their heritage together.

  • Northern Ireland: peace work in progress
    Oct 8 2023

In this episode of Meanings of Cohesion we travel to Northern Ireland to discover the story of Peter Sheridan, a former policeman who today works in the non-for-profit sector. Peter leads the NGO Cooperation Ireland in Belfast. For 30 years, Northern Ireland was the scene of violent confrontations between Unionists in favour of remaining within the United Kingdom, who were mainly Protestant, and Republicans in favour of reunification of the two Irelands, who were largely Catholic. It was at this troubled time that Peter Sheridan became a policeman. Today, at a time when Brexit has rekindled certain tensions, Peter is convinced that the economy and cooperation are the keys to a better future north and south of the border.
