  • The Messy Middle of Agricultural Data
    Jul 18 2024

In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak talks to Camille Grade, the Chief Market Officer at Bushel, shared her invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of agricultural technology and data management. As a key speaker at this year's Women in Agribusiness (WIA) Summit, Camille’s expertise and experience are highly anticipated by attendees eager to understand the intricacies of the "messy middle" of the supply chain.

Camille's journey with Bushel began over a decade ago when she played a pivotal role in transitioning the company from a digital consulting agency to a leading digital product platform focused on the agriculture industry. Since its launch in 2017, Bushel has rapidly grown, now powering over 3,500 grain and ag retail facilities across the U.S. and Canada, representing more than 50% of grain origination in these countries. This remarkable growth has made Bushel one of the largest technology networks in U.S. agribusiness.

During the interview, Camille highlighted the significance of the "messy middle" in the supply chain. While much focus has been on on-farm activities, there is a growing need to invest and innovate in this crucial part of the supply chain. Camille emphasized that efficient data collection, standardization, and organization are vital to maximizing productivity, mitigating risks, and driving profitability across agribusiness value chains. Bushel partners with its agribusiness partners to drive technology adoption among farmers, ensuring that they have the necessary tools and support to integrate new solutions into their operations effectively.

Camille's role in shaping Bushel's brand has been instrumental in its success. She shared her approach to creating a brand that resonates with authenticity in the agriculture sector. By using imagery and words that genuinely reflect the values and realities of farming communities, Bushel has built a strong and trustworthy brand that resonates with its audience.

A highlight of Bushel's efforts to connect with its customers is the annual Bushel Buddy Seat Conference. Camille explained that the name "Buddy Seat" reflects the conference’s goal of fostering close, collaborative relationships with agribusinesses such as ag retailers, grain elevators, full-service cooperatives, and ag lenders. The conference aims to provide valuable insights, share best practices, and strengthen the sense of community among its participants.

Camille Grade’s insights into the future of agricultural data and technology highlight the importance of innovation, collaboration, and authenticity in driving the industry forward. Her contributions to Bushel have not only transformed the company but have also made a significant impact on the broader agribusiness community. As she continues to lead Bushel in its mission to empower farmers and agribusinesses with cutting-edge technology, her influence on the industry is sure to grow.

  • The Crop with a Million Enemies
    Jul 10 2024

In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak dives deep into the world of flue-cured tobacco production with a true expert in the field, Dr. J Michael Moore, of the University of Georgia Tobacco Team. J Michael has dedicated his career to developing and implementing educational programs that guide farmers in producing high-quality tobacco. He collaborates closely with county Extension agents, researchers, and various agribusiness groups to deliver research-based recommendations, ensuring that Georgia farmers have the most up-to-date information at their fingertips. He coordinates a team of specialists, providing crucial knowledge on everything from production and harvesting to curing and marketing tobacco. He's the driving force behind the University of Georgia Tobacco Team and the visionary leader of the Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour, which showcases the latest advancements in tobacco farming.

The Southeastern United States has a rich history rooted in agriculture, with tobacco playing a pivotal role in the region's economic and cultural landscape. The industry, particularly flue-cured tobacco, has seen significant advancements through the years, driven by dedicated professionals and innovative research. Flue-cured tobacco, primarily grown in Georgia and Florida, is known for its high quality and distinct curing process. The leaves are harvested and then cured using heat in a controlled environment, which helps develop the tobacco's characteristic flavor and aroma. This type of tobacco is commonly used in cigarette production, making it a crucial crop for the region's farmers.

Dr. Moore's role involves developing and implementing educational programs focused on producing and managing flue-cured tobacco. By working closely with county Extension agents, researchers, and agribusiness groups, Dr. Moore ensures that farmers receive sound, research-based recommendations. These recommendations cover various aspects of tobacco production, from planting and growing to harvesting and curing.

    The Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour
One of the most notable initiatives led by Dr. Moore is the annual Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour. This event showcases the latest research and advancements in tobacco farming, offering growers a firsthand look at new varieties and cultivation techniques. The 2024 tour includes multiple demonstration locations featuring thirteen released varieties grown in Georgia and Florida, as well as research test locations evaluating eleven varieties for black shank resistance. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see the evaluation of a new Orondis premix formulation, applied in transplant water for black shank control and phytotoxicity.

Throughout the growing season, farmers must manage pests and diseases, which can significantly impact yield and quality. Regular monitoring and the use of recommended agricultural practices help mitigate these risks. As the plants mature, the leaves are harvested in stages, starting from the bottom and moving upwards.

The tobacco growing industry in the Southeast continues to

  • How Will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?
    Jun 12 2024

This week's North American Ag Spotlight is a little different, last week I attended the 2024 American Agri-women Fly-In in Washington DC. Among the many speakers we heard there was one extraordinarily excellent presentation by University of Delaware Professor Emeritus David R. Legates, Ph.D., C.C.M. His content is thought provoking and important as it flies against the grain of current ideology.

From the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. David R. Legates presentation was titled, 'How will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?' he did a deep dive into real climate data and how environmental extremism is causing problems for the American farmer and overall global food security. Legates has testified three times as an expert witness before the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works and before both Pennsylvania House and Senate Committee meetings on climate change. He participated in the historic joint USA-USSR protocol for the exchange of climate information in 1990, won the 2002 Boeing Autometric Award for the Best Paper in Image Analysis and Interpretation by the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, won First Place in the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and ESRI Paper Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was awarded the Courage in Defense of Science Award in 2015.

  • From Poop to Pots: The CowPots Dairy Farm Gamechanger!
    May 15 2024

Today, we are joined by Amanda Freund, a third-generation farmer from East Canaan, Connecticut. Together with her father, Matt, Amanda manages their company called CowPots, where the family manufactures biodegradable containers using the dairy farm’s digested and composted manure.

Amanda's connection to compost goes back to her 8th-grade science fair project, where she compared different carbon sources in compost piles. She also served as an agriculture volunteer with the Peace Corps in Zambia from 2010-2012, where she trained farmers on building and maintaining compost piles. Today, she oversees production schedules, marketing, and distribution of their value-added compost products nationwide.

CowPots uses pulp molding equipment to manufacture biodegradable, plantable containers from digested and composted cow manure. Currently offering 15 styles ranging in size from 3" to 17", CowPots began as a way for the family to manage their nutrients better and has grown into a profitable business that provides growers and gardeners with an American-made, renewable, and recycled alternative to plastic and peat pots.

Apart from CowPots, Amanda maintains the website and social media for another farm business, Freund's Farm Market and Bakery. In her free time, she enjoys dabbling in beekeeping and walking the crop fields with her dog, Brie.

Join us as we dive into Amanda's journey and how CowPots is revolutionizing the industry!

In the ever-evolving landscape of agriculture, staying ahead of trends is crucial. Understanding shifts in the market, especially regarding agricultural equipment, is essential for farmers, manufacturers, and industry professionals alike. Curt Blades, with a background rooted in marketing, business development, and leadership, offers insights into these trends. Hailing from Des Moines, Iowa, Curt is deeply committed to driving innovation and progress within the industry.

Blades, who comes from a farming background, is the perfect guide through the complexities of agricultural equipment sales. With a career dedicated to innovation and technology within the agricultural space, his journey reflects a deep understanding of the industry's intricacies.
