  • No Bad Teams, Only Bad Leaders
    Jan 23 2022

In the first segment of this episode, we’re going to take look at the media, or infotainment industry, and how they manipulate us to stay in business.  We outline the most common methods they use to feed us misinformation to keep us tuned-in — how we can spot it, and defend ourselves against it.  (Our source for this material is an excellent and informative video by Beau of the Fifth Column.  See the link below.)

In the second second segment, we continue our exploration of leadership by diving into Chapter 2 of Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Lief Babin:  No Bad Teams, Only Bad Leaders.

  • 2022 — Year of the Unicorn
    Jan 1 2022

This week Washington has continued its disingenuous and saturnine magic show.  That club-fisted sleight-of-hand that answers, “what are you doing?” with, “Me??  Hey, look over there!  A Unicorn!”  Sadly, many, many Americans are still falling for it.  You know, there’s a saying in the recovery community.  It goes like this:  “What’s the definition of insanity?  Continuing to do the same old thing, and expecting different results.”

Charlie Brown, knowing that Lucy has tricked him every time, gives it one more shot.  And devious Lucy, as we all know that she will, pulls the football away, and Charlie, yet again, winds up flat on his back.  Will he never learn?  Probably not.

In the first segment of the show, we’ll try to introduce a little sanity into this weeks news.  Instead of being tricked into kicking for the football again, let’s kick Lucy!

In the second second segment of this week’s podcast, we’ll begin our explorations of Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Lief Babin.

  • 2021 Wrapup
    Dec 12 2021

It’s been over two months since my last podcast.  I apologize, but as they say, “life happens.”  The pause has given me a chance to sit back, and re-think some things.

Just like in combat, sometimes you have to rise above the chaos, take a higher view, and try to get a “big-picture” idea of what’s really going on.  It’s too easy to get trapped in your own little bubble … Just like in combat, the adrenaline rush that enhances your ability to focus on the problem at hand, also causes tunnel-vision that prevents you from noticing shifts and changes on your flanks, or to the rear.

For this, the last podcast of 2021, we’re going to stop, pop our heads up, and take a look at the world around us — not the world as it was, or as we wish it were, but as it is right now.  We’ll look at how the dynamic nature of the current situation may profoundly affect the nature of our mission.  Like good hunters, when we lose the tracks, we’ll look to the trail.  We’ll consider current momentum in an effort to see the way ahead.

  • Operational Walkthrough: Execution
    Oct 4 2021

Last week, we began doing an Operational Walkthrough to give you some pointers on how to put  together and successfully conduct an Operation that advances your Mission.  We’re breaking it down into three main phases:  Objective, Execution, and Debriefing.  We’re devoting a whole episode — at the very least — to these phases, explaining the “why,” and “how” of each of them.  We’ll also consider Risk Assessment at each stage, as well as how to prepare, and and what to do when things go wrong.

This week, we’re going to begin an Operational Walkthrough to demonstrate how the OPS TEAM takes a preliminary Objective, and turns it into a successfully executed Operation.

  • Inerlude
    Sep 19 2021

This week, I want to step back; to take a break from talking about the Asymmetrical Approach as an effective way to win hearts and minds through clandestine community service.  Instead, I want to talk about why our approach may be a necessary strategy for personal survival in a world gone mad.

I’ve just returned from a safari that took me out of South Florida, and into the heart — not of deepest, darkest Africa — but of deepest, darkest Middle America.  What I found there, and along the way, was sobering, shocking, and terribly, terribly sad.  This week, we’re going to talk about patriotism, denial, delusion, and violence.  We’re going to bring a couple of new factors into our Asymmetrical planning and operations processes.  They are:  Risk, and Readiness.

  • TEAMS: Part Two
    Sep 5 2021

This week, we’re going to continue talking about TEAMS — the kind of teams you need to put together in order to achieve your Objectives in the Community. You can’t do everything, know everything, see everything, and be everywhere at one.  You need to work as part of a Team.

We began our discussion with building your Tactical (or, Operations) Team.  This week, we’ll be focusing on your Command Team — how to build it, how to keep it on track, and how to keep it secure. We’ll also begin discussing Leadership, and how to keep your teams from descending into either dictatorship, or chaos.
