  • 8. Team of the 90s - Right Back
    Jul 5 2024

It's the return of our Team of the 90s series, in which you pick the best United players from that decade to create the ultimate side from that incredibly successful decade. Today, Jon goes through your top 3 United right backs, as chosen by you!

I'm fairly sure we'd all agree on the winner, and one of our runners up is no surprise either, although the other player, who came 2= in the vote is a definite surprise, if not an outright shock! Remember, these selections were made by you and that I have no say in the order these players are ranked in!

Voting is now open for the next position - we're looking for a Left Back for the Team of the 90s - via the poll in our Facebook group. Remember you can only vote once, but feel free to add comments to justify your selection, or to support the cause of someone you perhaps didn't vote for but may have wanted to!

If you enjoy Retro Devils Manchester United history podcast, please be so kind to leave us a rating and positive review on your podcast app of choice. If it's good, we'll read it out on the show.

If you'd like to support Retro Devils in a tangible, financial way the best place to do that is on Patreon - where you can help keep the lights on for just £1 per month, or £3 monthly if you'd like some extra content too. All the money goes directly into making the podcast better, and your support is very greatly appreciated.

  • 7. The Famous Number Seven
    Jun 21 2024

This episode of Retro Devils is dedicated to the memory of Iain Goodlad.
Iain was our co-host and guest on Episode 5, talking about the magnificent 8-2 victory over Arsenal in 2011. He was also a massive Red and one of my best friends.

Tragically, Iain took his own life a few months back, and I don't want anyone else to have to go through the agony and anguish his family and friends have. My DMs on social media are always open if you need to talk, and here are some links to professional services who can help if required too:

Our topic for this episode of Retro Devils Manchester United History Podcast is the famous Number 7 shirt, and how it has become the phenomenon it is today. Who better to discuss this subject with than the foremost author and historian on all things United, than the one and only Wayne Barton?

We are absolutely delighted that Wayne took the time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about the Number 7 and what it means.
Wayne has his own podcast, Talking Devils, which you can listen to here:
    Talking Devils Podcast
and he is also a rotating host on No Question About That, another United podcast I enjoy, which can be found here:

Our next episode will be a return to our Team of the 90s series, and this time we'll be picking the Right Back position. To vote for your favourite to take shirt 2, you'll need to join our Facebook group:

  • Remembering Munich and the Busby Babes
    Feb 6 2024

On the 6th of February 1958, the greatest tragedy in Manchester United's history took place, when the plane carrying the team back from a successful European Cup tie in Belgrade, crashed during take-off after refuelling in Munich.

The Munich disaster robbed the world of 8 of the finest young players in Europe, and brought to an end the magic of the "Busby Babes" - United's adventurous, attacking, young team.

Today, we remember Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam "Billy" Whelan, alongside the others who were killed in the tragedy.

We also pay tribute to those who played heroic and important roles, both in the immediate and ongoing aftermath of the disaster and helped to keep the red flag flying high, ensuring that Man United will never die.

  • 5. I'd 8-2 Be An Arsenal Fan...
    Sep 2 2023

For this episode of Retro Devils, just ahead of the 2023/24 clash with Arsenal, Jon is joined by his good pal Iain Goodlad to discuss one of our favourite United matches of all time - the famous 8-2 mauling of the Gunners from August 2011, 12 years ago this week.

As well as the ins and outs of the game, we discuss the 2011-12 season and its wider impact on Manchester United, and football in general, and so much more - as well as an interruption from Sammy the Dog, making his podcast debut!

Don't forget to vote for your choice of goalie for the United Team of the 90s via the poll in our Facebook group. Remember you can only vote once, but feel free to add comments to justify your selection, or to support the cause of someone you perhaps didn't vote for but may have wanted to!

  • 4. Pick Your United Team of the 90s
    Aug 24 2023

With all the negative feeling and reporting around Manchester United at the moment, I thought it would be a good idea to do something to help lift the mood and also to involve you, the listener, in goings on here at Retro Devils.

So to that end, between us, we're going to assemble the United Team of the 90s, position by position, over the next few months - interspersed with our normal episodes. I feel like this could be a really fun collaborative process, and if it proves popular we can look into doing other decades in the future!

We're going to start our team with the Goalkeeper, and you can vote for your choice of goalie via the poll in our Facebook group. Remember you can only vote once, but feel free to add comments to justify your selection, or to support the cause of someone you perhaps didn't vote for but may have wanted to!

I think this will turn into a really fun series, and I'm excited to see the team that we create together.

If you enjoy Retro Devils Manchester United history podcast, please be so kind to leave us a rating and positive review, much like "VAR Ruined It" has done this time. If it's good, we'll read it out on the show.

  • 3. The Greatest Kits of All Time
    Jul 2 2023

Manchester United have just released their new home kit for the 2023/4 season, and whilst it is one of the better ones in recent seasons, we don't really care too much about it as it is too new for our remit!

However to mark the event in Retro Devils style, Jon discusses about the greatest United kits of all time, both home and away, as well as the worst kits ever! On a sad note, we did have an awesome guest lined up for this episode however real life meant that fell through at the last minute. We do hope to have that guest on in the future though, so we'll keep you posted!

If you prefer your podcasts in a visual format, we have a Youtube channel!

The best way to keep up with all the latest from Retro Devils is on twitter and we have also started a new Facebook group for like-minded Reds, which you can access here.

The best way to support the show is on Patreon from as little as £1 a month to help cover server costs etc.
Also if you could leave a rating and/or review wherever you listen to this podcast it probably won't so much except make us feel warm and fuzzy inside, and it may help us to attract bigger and more well-known guests to the show in future!

  • 2. Eric Cantona
    May 19 2023

Who better to focus on for the first proper episode of the podcast than Jon's first footballing hero than the icon, the enigma, the legend that is Eric Cantona?

Jon is joined by Andre from France to discuss all things Eric, from his early career in France, the antics that essentially forced him to leave the country, international football, moving to England and finding his eventual home at Manchester United under his mentor and father-figure in Alex Ferguson. Of course, the Kung-fu kick and the furore surrounding it is mentioned too, plus how Eric and Ferguson expertly dealt with the situation to bring out the best of Cantona once he returned.

We also look at Eric's post football career, his acting, modelling and everything else, as well as Andre's meeting with the great man, as well as discussing the Cantona effect on both of us, as well as his impact in Manchester and further afield.

You can follow Andre on twitter @_ericantona_ and Jon @SheltieDevil
