    May 10 2023

Amanda Winkelman has been tying and designing Steelhead flies since 2019. Her prior experience with color, texture and design in creative art, had her published internationally several times over in papercrafting. She has taken this love to a new realm. With her passion for nature, fish and flowing rivers, it seemed a natural progression to move into fly tying design and production.  She is a fly tying as well as fly casting instructor and ties on the Jr. Prostaff for Chinook Wind Outfitters. Amanda also works as the Women's Fly Fishing Program Lead at Emerald Water Anglers in West Seattle. She is an advocate for getting anyone interested  out on the water with a fly rod in hand! When not working in the Fly Fishing Industry, Amanda volunteers for Warriors and Quiet Waters, helping post 9/11 vets and their loved ones find peace and joy in life being on the water fly fishing. A PNW native, she resides north of Seattle with her husband and 5 children.

Amanda was awarded the 2022 FFI Washington State Fly Tyers Award.

Been fishing since 2019 after taking a class in college. Moved to Washington in late 2019 and have been exploring the area for the last few years. I always want to be on a river or a creek with a dry fly, but looking forward to trying some more still water this year!

    Mar 13 2023

I started fly fishing over 20 years ago, as a 13 year old I was self taught. Making plenty of mistakes along the way I found myself buried deep in a passion for fly fishing. Not long after I started fly fishing I started tying flies. I had a dream to work in the fishing industry and luckily that dream came true for me years later. I started out teaching fly tying classes, rod building classes and the found myself as the Production Manager for RoundRocks Flies. Our flies are distributed all throughout the USA and it’s helped me make a dream a reality. I’m just a trout bum who lives to fish and tie flies. Fishing all over the west from my home in Hyrum Utah up and down the Borders of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Feel free to catch up with me on Instagram at Fly_cache, our business website is RoundRocksflies.com and you can also check us out on instagram at roundrocksflies.

  • Andreea Drugov Episode 5
    Mar 8 2023

“Growing up, I thought fishing was all about throwing a hooked worm into a body of water, attach a bobber on the line, and wait. And wait some more. It wasn’t until I met my husband, an avid fly fisherman, a few years ago, that I discovered fly fishing, a much more dynamic type of fishing. From the distance it looked so challenging, almost impossible for me to even try. Which is why I did end up I trying it. I would find trees and bushes to get snagged up on where no one else would find any trees and bushes, I’d end up with destroyed flies by what I thought were snags, blaming myself so many times for being unable to pick up the skill, for not knowing that “something” that everyone else seemed to know. Got discouraged and almost gave up countless times, but figured what the heck, I’ve done things much more complicated in life, I can do this too. So I kept trying, kept learning, kept driving my husband crazy, kept practicing knots at the dinner table to redo rigs much faster than trying to untangle them, hiding being intimidated on the water as much as I could, until I got better. Only to learn that it’s not always about catching the fish and the adrenaline rush, but also about our mental wellbeing, inner peace brought on by the beautiful nature, people you meet, and always about that “one more cast”. I will always consider myself a newbie because there is also something else to learn, to try, to find new techniques and setups that work. And pass that knowledge on to those who appreciate the waters and the nature. My goal is to promote the sport among women and children, both as an angler and a guide, to help create new and future generations of ethical fly fishing anglers.
